1913, hundred years after : EUROPE's intellectual twilight or renaissance ?
Dr. Vital Rambaud and Dr. Jacob Schmutz, Prof. Christian Chêne, Université Paris-Descartes
Departments of Literature and Philosophy, Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi
1913 was an extraordinarily rich year on the literary, artistic, philosophical and political level, and a multitude of centenaries will be commemorated during 2013: besides giving birth to Albert Camus, it saw the publication of the first volume of Marcel Proust's Search of Lost Time and of Apollinaire's major collection of poems, Alcools. But with World War One looming, voices from other continents spoke up and promised the inexorable decline of materialist and colonialist Europe, such as Rabindranath Tagore, first non-Western author to be consecrated in 1913 with the Nobel Prize in Literature. It was in Paris, finally, that the first Pan-Arab Congress was held in 1913, and that the Syrian Rashid Rida paved the way to contemporary Salafism. In a joint lecture hosted by the Departments of Literature and Philosophy, Vital Rambaud and Jacob Schmutz will show how the debates of 1913 are still those of 2013: is Europe still capable of intellectual Renaissance, or is it experiencing its "splendid twilight"?

VISIT OF THE FRENCH CONSULATE IN BASRA during the second half of the EIGHTEENTH Century
The creation of a first French Consulate in the Arabian Gulf in 1735 shows the importance of Basra as an economic market place. Wars and rivalries would progressively ruin this prosperity, but the French Secretary of State of the Navy nevertheless decided to maintain the consulate, in order to remain informed about the political situation in the Arabian Gulf. The correspondence of the French agents allows us to visit this establishment and to sketch the organization and action of an eighteenth-century consulate.
