The lecture will comprise of a presentation and then a question and answer session. It will cover all essential topics about the food diet before and after the bariatric surgery, dedicated to the obese individuals and promoting a healthy lifestyle. The lecture will be presented by Dr. Abdelrahman Nimeri, Director of the Bariatric & Metabolic Institute - Abu Dhabi of SKMC and Nour Al Mehairi, Clinical Dietitian at SKMC.

The lecture is intended to raise awareness on issues related to obesity and recommended nutritional diets to follow before and after a bariatric surgery procedure. Both speakers will discuss the   treatment process and provide the attendees with information regarding the various options related to pre-op and post-op preparations done with bariatric surgeries. Furthermore, it will be an opportunity for those who are considered to be morbidly obese to find out about some of the medical and surgical treatments options in case they think about going for bariatric surgery. In addition, the physician and the dietitian will explain the potential link between bariatric surgeries and eating habits.  No pre-registration is required to attend the presentation and the auditorium`s doors will be open starting from 03:30 pm.

Dr. Nimeri stated, "During the one-hour health talk, the presentation will take around 10 minutes and the following 50 minutes will be dedicated to answer the audience's questions. Attendees might also have the opportunity to meet some of the patients who had a bariatric surgery or are being evaluated to have one. We will discuss the heart consequences of obesity. Based on international studies, people suffering from obesity and Body Mass Index of more than 30 will have more than 70% increased prevalence of coronary artery diseases. Patients who are considered for a bariatric surgery are patients with a Body Max Index (BMI) of more than 40 or patients with a BMI more than 35 with serious medical problems such as Type 2 Diabetes Miletus, Dyslipidemia or Hypertension."

Nour Al Mehairi said, "We organized such a health talk because of the increased interest in the topic and the increasing proportion of obese people in our society. Some individuals are obese and feel afraid of going for a bariatric surgery and would like to follow a hard diet hoping to get a fast result. At SKMC, patients are assessed and thoroughly educated about surgery options that best suit their medical condition and lifestyle. After surgery, nutrition specialists help them integrate healthy food choices, eating habits, and exercise into their daily routine. We offer emotional support, too, plus regular follow-up with our bariatric professionals. Both are essential to maintain an improved quality of life".

"The invitation is directed to the public from all ages, and we highly encourage them to attend this gathering to help raise their awareness about healthy lifestyles and obesity prevention. The next public health talk on obesity is scheduled on 18 September June 2012 at 4:00 pm," Dr. Nimeri said.

Since Bariatric Surgery started at SKMC in June 2009, more than 230 bariatric surgeries were successfully performed for patients who had an extended history of obesity and diseases related to obesity.
