Dubai, UAE - On the back of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by Dubai's Road Transport Authority (RTA) and Shell on 8 September 2015, Shell Bitumen has conducted a Technical Engagement with the RTA as well as its leading contractors, on sustainable and environmentally sensitive bitumen technologies that are suited to the road transportation requirements of rapidly growing cities like Dubai.
Led by Shell Bitumen's Technical Development Manager Dr Richard Taylor, Shell highlighted the pressing need for performance-based specifications for bituminous materials to address the challenges of the 21st century traffic in an extreme climactic environment like the Middle East. Global trends in bitumen technology and application were highlighted, including the need for an integrated system for design of asphalt pavements, selection of the constituent materials and construction practices.
"We have supplied our bitumen solutions and expertise in the Middle East for several years and have demonstrated our expertise through many prestigious infrastructure projects in the region, including the runways at Dubai International Airport, Al Maktoum International Airport and Abu Dhabi International Airport. We look forward to deepening our engagement activities with the RTA and together, to building and maintaining Dubai's world class road network," said Emily Tan, General Manager of Shell Bitumen, Asia Pacific Middle East.
H.E Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors expressed RTA's keenness on improving sustainability and green economy, and contributing to the Dubai Energy Strategy 2030 through adopting the highest global standards in optimizing the consumption of energy and water, and protecting the environment and public health in various RTA projects. "Such endeavours are aligned with the drive of the Dubai Government in nurturing a green and sustainable environment at the highest international standards," he noted.
