Shell has announced its support of the Doha Green and Sustainability Summit (DGSS) by becoming one of the event's main sponsors. The one-day summit, being held on April 11th 2010 at the Grand Hyatt in Doha, will be a platform for businesses, communities and individuals to learn, exchange and partner to find practical solutions for environmental sustainability, starting in the State of Qatar.

The memorandum was signed by Andy Brown, Executive Vice President of Shell, and Ravi Raman, DGSS Working Committee Member. Shell has signed as a key sponsor for the summit as part of its commitment to sustainable development.  Contributing to sustainable development is integral to the way Shell does business. As it helps meet the world's growing demand for energy, Shell seeks to bring benefits to local communities and reduce the impact of its operations, including on the environment.

In Qatar, the giant Pearl Gas to Liquids project, which Shell is building with Qatar Petroleum, is designed to be highly integrated, efficient and self-sufficient. Heat and water produced in the GTL process are reused in the plant. Pearl GTL will not use any of Qatar's scarce water resources, and the plant is designed to be capable of having zero water discharge.

In addition, Shell's research at the Qatar Science & Technology Park includes a $70 million joint study with Qatar Petroleum, the science park and Imperial College London into carbonate reservoirs and carbon dioxide storage. The research fund is one of the largest of its type worldwide.

At the science park, Shell is also developing  innovative and environmentally-sensitive ways to utilise sulphur, which is a by-product of Qatar's natural gas production. These technologies include using sulphur to replace cement in concrete and some of the bitumen in asphalt.

Shell has also endowed a Chair in Sustainable Development at Qatar University.

"Human, Social, Economic and Environmental Development are the pillars of the Qatar National Vision 2030 and they are also the pillars of sustainable development. We hope that our support for this summit will help that vision become reality," said Andy Brown, Executive Vice President of Shell , "We are keen to learn from others and share our experience so far."

The DGSS is the first ever sustainability and environmental seminar to be held in Qatar. The summit will bring together local, regional as well as international speakers. These speakers will share relevant case studies as well as prompt discussions on issues of environmental development and sustainability.

"Having international businesses with a strong local presence, such as Shell, sign on as a partner shows their commitment to sustainable development in Qatar," said Ravi Raman, DGSS Working Committee Member. "DGSS's success stands on the engagement of both local and international businesses. This summit will be an opportunity for such engagement and exchange of knowledge and ideas."

About Shell in Qatar
Shell is building two of the largest energy projects in the world with Qatar Petroleum in Ras Laffan Industrial City.

Pearl Gas to Liquids (GTL) is the largest project ever launched in Qatar. It will be the world's largest GTL plant and will cement Qatar's place as the GTL capital of the world.

The Qatargas 4 LNG project is being developed by Qatargas on behalf of shareholders QP and Shell (30 per cent). The project combines Shell's global leadership amongst private energy companies in LNG with Qatar's vision to become the world's largest LNG supplier.

Shell has established a world-class research and development facility and a learning centre at the Qatar Science & Technology Park. We call this facility the Qatar Shell Research & Technology Centre and we are committed to investing up to $100 million on programmes there over 10 years.

Shell has been appointed by Qatar Gas Transport Company (known as Nakilat) as shipping and maritime services provider for one of the most significant fleets in the global LNG business. A key element of the agreement is the commitment to develop Nakilat's shipping expertise.

We have a strategic partnership with Qatar Petroleum International to work together on projects around the world throughout the energy value chain.

We are working with Qatar Fuels (WOQOD) to supply Shell marine lubricants in the ports of Qatar. WOQOD is also providing Shell marine lubricants to Nakilat vessels abroad.

We are proud that the State of Qatar has chosen Shell to be their partner in these projects.
