His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Establishment for Young Business Leaders, presented prizes among the winners of the Fazza Falcon Hunting Championship at a ceremony held at a special marquee near the UAE Pavilion in the Global Village on Wednesday night (March 1, 2006).

Held last month, the three-day championship was sponsored by Al Tayer Motors and Dubai Islamic Bank. The hugely-popular championship was held over a distance of 350 square metres and, for the first time, witnessed the organizers using three hi-tech cameras to track the distance and speed of the competing falcons, the national bird of UAE.  More than 150 UAE nationals competed for the coveted programme held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The championship is part of the successful efforts to popularize traditional sports among the young generation UAE nationals and preserve the rich culture and heritage of the emirate.

The competition was held in the Alharar, Alshahin and Altbouaa categories, with three winners in each category. The first winners in each category received Ford cars while the first runners up got AED 15,000 and second runners-up AED 10,000, respectively.

The winners in the first category were Faris Al Murr, Ali Bin Haluba and Humaid bin Amli. The second category winners were Khalifa Ahmed Bin Sharf Mejren; Yaber Sultan Al Mutaiwee and Mohammed Khalifa Bu Duhoom. The winners in the third category were Nasser Khalifa Bil Jafflla, Nasser Khalifa Bil Jafflla and Mansoor Ahmed bin Al Sharaf.

Sheikh Hamdan thanked the sponsors, participants and organizing team for the success of the championship and the public support to promote falconry in the region.

The UAE Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development, Mr. Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Owais, thanked Sheikh Hamdan for his personal encouragement to protect falconry and promote falcon hunting through various initiatives.

He also praised Sheikh Hamdan for the improvement in the competition format for the next year's championship.

The Fazza Falcon Hunting Championship will be held at a different venue next year with a new competition held among the winners, to determine the "best among the best"  falcon hunters of the region.
