Key Tool for Wireless Operators to Implement Large-Scale Deployment of Revenue Generating Services

PARIS - SchlumbergerSema, a business segment of Schlumberger Limited, today announced the launch of its new SIM2SIM device, which enables the automatic and secure transfer of end-user personal data from one subscriber identity module (SIM) smart card to another.

Weighing just 28 grams, and smaller than a disposable camera, the compact device is a stand-alone, two-slot SIM card reader, consisting of a screen, keypad and batteries. Two SIM cards are inserted into the reader and the relevant personal identify numbers (PIN) are entered on the keypad to authorize the transfer of information, such as the user phone book or short messages. The transfer of information from card to card can be done easily by the end-user at home in just a few seconds.

"For operators in today's competitive market, the key to building customer satisfaction among their existing subscriber base and attracting competitors' subscribers lies in their capacity to offer innovative and differentiated services," said Xavier Chanay, vice president, Telecommunication Cards, SchlumbergerSema. "The new SchlumbergerSema SIM2SIM device is a simple, but powerful tool that enables the subscriber to transfer personal data from one card to another in a fast, easy and secure way. This enables mobile telecommunications operators to deploy a major upgrade of SIM cards in their subscriber base to maximize their return on investment."

Until now, operators have been reluctant to initiate massive SIM replacement projects, despite the huge potential revenues that could be generated from new SIM-based solutions and services. This is primarily due to the limitations of existing technologies for SIM data transfer, which are either PC-based or require the user to return to the original point-of-sale.

SchlumbergerSema has developed the SIM2SIM device, which XIRING is producing, to ensure the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the product, and bring it to market quickly. The product is patented and has been developed in compliance with the ISO 7816 and GSM 11.11 standards, which guarantees its interoperability with SIM cards already in the field.

Due to its low cost, compact size and independence from any computer or network connection, the device can be sent directly to customers in their homes or offices. The SchlumbergerSema SIM2SIM can be a key tool in encouraging users to upgrade to enhanced SIM cards, allowing operators to implement large-scale deployment of revenue generating services.

Drawing on more than 20 years experience in pioneering smart card innovation, SchlumbergerSema - which has been named the world's leading provider of microprocessor smart cards by Gartner Dataquest* - has sold more than 2.6 billion smart cards to date. SchlumbergerSema has a proven track record providing customers with a wide range of business solutions, services and products that improve the competitive advantage of customers in the telecommunications industry.
