SINGAPORE - SchlumbergerSema, a business unit of Schlumberger Limited, today announced that it has completed a Business Continuity consulting study for Unocal Thailand at its Bangkok facilities. Covering specific Exploration & Production (E&P) processes as well as general business systems, the study was part of a high-priority initiative within Unocal. These types of consulting services are an important part of the complete business continuity capabilities that SchlumbergerSema provides to enterprises around the world through its DeXa.Ensure solution.
Unocal is one of the world's leading independent natural gas and crude oil exploration and production companies. The company's principal oil and gas activities are in North America and Asia.
"Today's environment means that all businesses, oil & gas included, need to have proper understanding of the risks to business continuance, and to plan accordingly," said Tara Tiradnakorn, vice president, Operations for Unocal Thailand Ltd. "SchlumbergerSema was selected to help gain that understanding and produce a range of strategy options. The combination of local E&P experience and broad-based Business Continuity skills meant that the work was highly relevant to our situation."
"By providing leadership and commitment from top management, Unocal ensured that one of the most vital factors for success was in place," said Ron Mobed, development manager, Business Continuity, SchlumbergerSema. "In addition, Unocal management participated fully in the study, which meant that resources were allocated effectively and directed towards the most critical processes."
The scope of work covered Business Impact Analysis, Risk and Vulnerability Assessment and Strategy Evaluation for the major business processes handled in Unocal Thailand's Bangkok Head Office. Functions specific to the oil & gas industry, such as Asset Teams, Engineering & Construction and Logistics; as well as general processes such as Finance, HR and IT were included.
The study investigated internal processes as well as those having dependencies on outside parties. In the E&P industry, which uses service companies extensively, these dependencies were especially important. Critical data flows, such as well information, were examined and tracked from wellsite acquisition to delivery and analysis. Other workflows, such as drilling and well-planning, had function-related as well as data-related dependencies. The resources of the Schlumberger Oilfield Services team in Bangkok played a key role in the execution of the project.
Interviews with managers and operational staff were used to determine criticalities. Findings were consolidated in workshops, which yielded detailed prioritization within functions - such as selection of critical interpretation projects. The resulting Business Continuity strategy options were therefore tuned to the detailed specific issues facing the business.
SchlumbergerSema business continuity services are offered through DeXa.Ensure, part of the DeXa Suite of Services for computing infrastructure, secure network connectivity, information security and business continuity.
