[Seoul, Korea] May 21st, 2012 - Samsung Engineering announced it had received the honor of "National Winner for Bahrain in MEED Quality Awards for Projects 2012" for its instrumental role in the successful execution of the Bahrain Bapco Lube Base Oil Plant (LBOP). At the award ceremony held at The Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort & Spa, MEED officially recognized Samsung Engineering in front of industry experts and peers.
The MEED Quality Awards for Projects has recognized best practices among completed projects in the GCC region since 2010. Each project was evaluated by six experts in the GCC projects industry based on economic, social and environmental aspects, which included achievements in design, engineering and construction. This year, MEED recognized twenty-four projects as national winners.
"The Lube Base Oil Plant is one of the largest of its type in the world, and we are honored to have played a role in the development of Bahrain as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for this project. With the support of our respected client Bapco and partners, we were able to execute the project on time and achieve the safety milestone of 10 million man hours without lost time incident," said Samsung Engineering Vice President and Construction Project Manager of the LBOP, Mr. Kyung-tae Kim.
In August 2008, Samsung Engineering was awarded the LBOP project by Bahrain's National Oil Company, Bapco. The engineering, procurement, construction, pre-commissioning and commissioning contract received was $314 million USD in value, delivered on a lump-sum turn-key basis, and achieved project completion on November 29th, 2011.
This project benefited the national economy substantially, as it involved local sub contractors who employed approximately 3,000 workers for the execution of the project, including around 200 Bahrain Nationals. Samsung Engineering also played a role in facilitating the development of Bahrain by donating $100,000 USD towards the renovation of the children's ward and medical equipment for Salmaniya Hospital on November 28th, 2011.
The MEED Quality award highlights Samsung Engineering's outstanding ability to execute and complete the project on-time and safely as well as its effort for working towards co-prosperity in local community. In addition, it is significant that Samsung Engineering is the first Korean contractor to accept a MEED Quality Award for plant engineering.
Upon receiving the honor at the awards ceremony, Seungchan Lee, Head of the UAE branch office at Samsung Engineering said, "After a decade of passionately delivering quality projects in the Middle East, we are very excited to be officially recognized for our engineering and project management expertise through a highly reputable organization such as MEED. We are here today because our clients trusted in our capabilities and we were able to exceed their expectations."
