Events include educative workshops and visits to patients injured in traffic accidents
Roads and Transport Authority - Abdul-Fattah Haidrah: The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) will kick start today the events of the GCC Traffic Week 2012 by holding various awareness activities at Rashid Hospital comprising educative workshops and visits to the injured at Rashid Hospital.
Engineer Maitha bin Udai, CEO of Traffic & Roads Agency, reiterated the importance of inviting the attention of the public to the risks of traffic accidents resulting in scores of casualties taken to hospitals. "Those injured in traffic accidents are clear message to all drivers to avoid reckless driving and focus their attention on driving since the key factors responsible for traffic accidents hover around misjudgment on the part of road users, and over speeding," she said.
"The slogan championed by the GCC Traffic Week 2012 "Together to Reduce Traffic Accidents" underscores the importance of making concerted community efforts to curb traffic accidents and fatalities as well as resulting injuries. The RTA, in coordination with its strategic partners, has made effective efforts to reduce fatalities as evidenced by statistics of the last three years in Dubai which reveal a 40 percent drop in traffic accidents-related fatality rates from 225 cases in 2009 to 134 cases in 2011.
"The awareness events prepared by the RTA for the GCC Traffic Week target most community segments, particularly those injured in traffic accidents, visitors of Rashid Hospital, visitors of the Festival City Center, workers using bicycles working in the Dry Docks, and familiarizing students with the Traffic Track at Al Aqsa Primary Education School. Events also include receiving GCC delegates to acquaint them with RTA's practices in the field of traffic awareness mainly targeting the community segments.
"Events at Rashid Hospital during this day comprise an educative workshop held in coordination with the Emirates Driving Institute about the importance of applying the safety belt. Those in charge of the event will use a vehicle designated for demonstrating the functionality of the safety belt during overturn and collision accidents. Events include an exhibition for educative publications such as booklets and pamphlets distributed free of charge, and visiting the victims of traffic accidents to offer them moral support and inquire about how such accidents took place in order to benefit from such occurrences in designing and preparing educative programs and publications.
"The RTA events will continue on daily basis throughout the GCC Traffic Week where educative events will continue tomorrow at the Dry Docks. On Tuesday a host of diverse events will be held at the Festival City Center and events will roll on through the end of the Week on two sessions: a morning session from 10:00 am to 02:00 pm and an evening session from 05:00 pm to 09:00 pm. On the same day, events will start at the Traffic Track at Al Aqsa Primary Education School in the presence of GCC delegations. RTA events will conclude at the Festival City Center with special events encompassing the launch of the new issue of Salama magazine, which will be distributed freely to visitors of the Center featuring the participation of famous cartoons.
