Real jobs with real responsibility and support through a proactive shadowing scheme is the key to developing more Qatari leaders in the energy industry, according to A.P. Moller - Maersk's Global Head of Talent and Performance Management, Ricardo Sookdeo. His comments came during a speech at Qatar Petroleum's first Human Resources Conference, which is focused on building capabilities in the energy and industry sector.

The A.P. Moller - Maersk Group is a world-wide conglomerate with core focus on shipping and oil & gas. The company employs approximately 89,000 people and operates in 135 countries, including Qatar - where Maersk Oil operates the complex Al Shaheen oil field in close partnership with Qatar Petroleum. Al Shaheen is Qatar's largest offshore oil and produces more than one-third of Qatar's daily oil production.

Maersk Oil Qatar recently announced a new approach to attracting, developing and retaining Qataris through a revitalised Qatarization Strategy, supported by the high profile Find Your Place recruitment campaign.

Ricardo Sookdeo, A.P. Moller - Maersk's Global Head of Talent and Performance Management, said: "Qatarization is a core business priority for Maersk Oil. We have made great strides in the past five years with a doubling in the number of Qataris at Maersk Oil and a 23% increase in those with a Bachelor degree, but we recognise more can be done to unlock human potential and develop the leaders of the future.

We are committed to quadrupling the number of Qataris in leadership positions and senior specialist roles at Maersk Oil by 2017. To achieve that, we have taken a different approach that focuses predominantly on providing on-the-job training and filling the skills gap with mentoring, coaching by certified in-house professionals and a shadowing scheme that gives leadership responsibility to Qataris in a faster, more structured way. Maersk Oil believes that real jobs with real responsibility is the key to developing human capacity."

Sheikh Jassim Al-Thani, Maersk Oil Qatar's Head of Qatarization, said: "I congratulate Qatar Petroleum, our partners at Al Shaheen, for holding the first of what I'm sure will be many HR conferences for professionals in the energy and industry sector. The attendance at the gathering by A.P. Moller - Maersk's Global Head of Talent and Performance Management is a clear signal that Qatarization is a core business priority for our company.

Maersk Oil's policy of accelerated development, through transitional support, cross posting to international projects and executive leadership courses is something I strongly support to boost the number of Qataris in leadership and senior specialist roles by 2017."

As part of Maersk Oil's Qatarization Strategy, a two-year Qatari Development Programme was launched to assist those early in their careers to develop skills in time and people management, group dynamics, strategic planning and financial management. An in-house certified careers coach was also employed to oversee the development of Qataris within Maersk Oil Qatar.

About Maersk Oil Qatar
In partnership with Qatar Petroleum, Maersk Oil Qatar operates one of the world's most complex fields, offshore at Al Shaheen. It produces a third of Qatar's oil. Turning marginal and challenging fields into successes has been the cornerstone of Maersk Oil's growth since it began in 1962. This is particularly true in Qatar, where Maersk Oil took over the Al Shaheen field in the early 1990s at a time when others walked away. Maersk Oil has now recovered in excess of one billion barrels of oil from the field, which currently produces around 300,000 barrels of oil per day. Success has come from Maersk Oil's experience, expertise and close relationships.
