It was announced yesterday that the International Trade and Development Co. (ITD) has added their name to the group of prestigious building owners who will be linking their buildings to the innovative new District Cooling Scheme in Doha's West Bay area. ITD has two innovative building projects that will now be a part of the new District Cooling Scheme.
Situated just opposite the City Centre, Al Dana Tower will provide 29,000 square metres of office space with 10,000 square metres of parking. Built to a very high specification and exciting design the new tower incorporates many interesting features. Notable amongst these is the spherical conference room located on the 20th floor and anchored at only two points. Resembling a Gulf Pearl, it is this conference room that gives the Tower its name.
The Residential Tower will be a 30 story residential complex providing 270 one, two and three bedroom apartments, leisure facilities, cafeteria and parking.
Due to be completed in 2006, both buildings will further enhance the dramatic new skyline emerging in the West Bay Area.
"Using the District Cooling system makes very good business sense," said Mr. Louis H. Saleh, Projects Director of ITD. "In addition to the environmental benefits and efficiencies in running costs, by eliminating the requirement for chillers in each building, District Cooling has enabled my designers to incorporate an extra floor of rentable space into each building."
"District Cooling is proving very popular with a number of building owners" said Colin Goulding General Manager of Qatar Cool. "As people become more familiar with the way the system works and the benefits that can accrue, they want to take advantage of the efficiencies and savings that district Cooling provides."
District Cooling works by supplying chilled water from a central location to a number of buildings via a network of pipes, removing the need to have chillers in each building and thus greatly reducing capital costs and running expenses for building owners. In addition, the system is environmentally friendly and virtually maintenance free.
Not only is District Cooling extremely cost efficient, the associated environmental advantages are significant. 50% energy saving means considerable reductions in power generation and the production of Co2, the major cause of global warming. District Cooling uses environmentally friendly refrigerants in a contained and controlled environment which, combined with rigorous health and safety standards, means less potential damage to the Ozone layer.
Qatar Cool's District Cooling Scheme in West Bay will be the result of a QR300 million investment program over the next few years. It will be able to supply more than 51,000 refrigerating tons of cooling, enough to meet the cooling requirements of 60 typical office buildings. Further schemes are planned for the future and it is estimated that over QR1billion will be invested in developing District Cooling schemes for Qatar over the next five years.
Qatar District Cooling Company, known as Qatar Cool, is a private sector joint venture company owned 50.5% by United Development Company (UDC), 44.5% by the Dubai registered National District Cooling Company (Tabreed) and 5% by private Qatari investors.
