DOHA, QATAR: 30 May 2013 - The Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee has appointed KEO as the Project Manager and AECOM as the Design Consultant for Al Wakrah Stadium.
Al Wakrah Stadium will have a gross tournament capacity of 45,000 during the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™.
The top-tiers of the stadium will be modular. Following the tournament, the capacity of the stadium will be reduced to 20,000, with 25,000 seats removed, donated and re-constructed in coordination with FIFA in countries that require assistance in developing sporting infrastructure.
The vision for the delivery of the Al Wakrah stadium is one that embraces the cultural heritage of the host city and the adjacent historical Qatari settlement of Al Wukair, incorporating this identity as part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ fan experience.
"This is an important step for us as we deliver on our innovative hosting concept," said Hassan Al Thawadi, Secretary General for the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, "We are looking forward to working with our partners on Al Wakrah Stadium to construct an amazing sporting facility that both serves the local community and integrates with Al Wakrah's fabric. We are delighted with the sustainable legacy that this stadium, as well as forthcoming ones, will leave behind for Qatar and the world."
"In the coming months, we will also bring on-board a project manager and design consultant for Al Rayyan Stadium," he added.
CH2M HILL, the Programme Management Consultant for the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, will supervise both KEO and AECOM to ensure the successful delivery of the Al Wakrah Stadium and Precinct in line with the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee's Vision, Mission and Strategic Goals.
Following the appointment, Donna Sultan, CEO of KEO, said, "What excites me most about KEO's project management role in the delivery of Al Wakrah stadium is the incredible synergy of expertise that has been brought together by the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee. The entire delivery team includes companies and individuals that are the best in their fields."
"We are delighted to be involved with the 2022 FIFA World Cup programme and to support the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee. This is an exciting time for Qatar, and our global team of forward-thinking sports experts are well equipped to take on the innovative challenges that a project of this calibre will demand," said AECOM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John M. Dionisio.
Project Manager:
KEO will develop a world-class health, safety and environmental programme for the Stadium and Precinct, assist the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee in delivering on stadium commitments made to FIFA and perform Project Management, Design Management, Commercial Management and Construction Management Services on behalf of Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee.
KEO is responsible for the overall management, strategy and implementation of the project.
More broadly, their remit includes the successful management of Design, Procurement, Construction, Testing and Commissioning of the precinct, associated facilities and the surrounding areas for both the tournament and legacy stages.
Design Consultant:
AECOM in association with Zaha Hadid Architects will work collaboratively with the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, CH2M HILL and KEO throughout the design and delivery process to ensure compliance with all required design standards and sustainability requirements, as well as all the local and international codes relevant to the project.
Moreover, AECOM will ensure the integration of cooling technology systems with climate control objectives and requirements for renewable energy production.
A delegation of Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee officials recently visited two stadiums designed by AECOM in Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington.
Al Wakrah Stadium and Precinct Survey:
The appointment of KEO and AECOM follows the undertaking of a community survey of the residents of Al Wakrah, aimed at gauging public opinion on development of the precinct (surrounding area) of the planned new stadium.
The survey aims to gather the relevant information required to assist the decision-making process concerning the precinct of the future stadium site and to ensure that new urban development in the area leaves a lasting social, economic and sporting legacy for citizens and residents. A survey of the residents of the Al Rayyan area has also been launched recently, with the same purpose.
Al Wakrah: Business Case and Legacy Committee:
The precinct survey is one element of a comprehensive study undertaken by the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee to ensure that Al Wakrah Stadium and its surrounding areas are constructed with the needs of the community front of mind, in addition to aligning with the overall goals of the country - as outlined in the Qatar National Vision 2030.
The 'business case' analyses the future development of the area from a strategic, economic and financial perspective, providing a thorough overview of the different options in developing the area and ensuring that any construction and development undertaken is viable and beneficial before, during and in the years after the 2022 FIFA World Cup™.
The Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee's Legacy Committee is advising on strategies, policies and plans to produce a lasting legacy that reaches well beyond 2022 and achieves the true potential for the State of Qatar. The Legacy Committee is comprised of a number of senior level government officials who meet regularly to ensure the human, social, economic, and environmental legacy themes are being properly implemented. The Legacy Committee has taken an active role in reviewing the master plan designs and business case documents for the Al Wakrah stadium and precinct to make sure that legacy planning is a cornerstone of the delivery process.Workers Charter:
Construction work carried out on Al Wakrah Stadium will be guided by the recently launched 'Workers Charter.' The Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee firmly believes that all workers engaged on its projects have a right to be treated in a manner that ensures at all times their wellbeing, health, safety and security.
The committee affirms that all contractors and sub-contractors engaged in the delivery of its projects will comply with the principles set out in this charter as well as all relevant Qatari laws. The principles of the charter will be robustly and effectively monitored and enforced by the committee for the benefit of all workers.
Compliance with the Workers Charter and all relevant Qatari laws is a pre-requisite for the selection and retention by the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee of its contractors and sub-contractors.
