Pilot station to reduce two tons of CO2 emissions per year

Kuwait, January 3 2012 - The Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET) in collaboration with PACE-Pan Arab Consulting Engineers, today announced their intention to provide a State-of-the-Art design to set-up a Solar Energy Station Experimental Project, which will be located in the College of Basic Education (CBE) Campus in Ardiyah; adjacent to Jaber Al Ahmad Stadium.

PACE, a leader in the architectural consultancy field with over 43 years of experience is designing it's unique project, which will produce one Mega Watt of Solar energy, which reflects its committed approach to sustainable renewable energy sources and green building applications.  The Campus consists of 32 buildings built on an area of 450,000 sqm, with an open roof space of 40,000sqm. The experimental project will include applications such as photovoltaic solar panel arrays, photovoltaic film arrays, thermal water heaters, stand-alone external light fittings, all of which will contribute to a saving of 20%  electrical power consumption on campus and reducing two tons of CO2 emissions per year.

PACE's scope of work for this project includes selecting a highly qualified and experienced design team to be fully dedicated to this project, in addition to developing the project's design criteria and project budgeting that covers solar systems.  The project's approximate estimated budget to-date is five million Kuwaiti Dinars and is expected to be completed by June 2012.

The Buildings on Campus have been provided with skylights and curtain walls to increase daylight and reduce the indoors lighting levels, thereby reducing energy consumption on Campus. In addition, Lighting Control System and Building Automation System has been set up to monitor and control the systems' performance and energy consumption.  Also, a central plant has been installed to provide chilled water and pretreated water for irrigation purposes.

Apart from providing services to more than 8,000 students, the project will also offer students the opportunity to understand the importance of solar energy, sustainability and green building applications.   

Most educational institutes are only operational during daytime based on studies and research findings. Kuwait enjoys minimum average estimated six hours of sunlight on a daily basis.  Most universities, college campuses and schools only utilize 35% of their roof for miscellaneous building services.  PACE is committed to utilize solar energy sources to generate energy, thereby turning business challenges into sustainable practices.
