Oman's First International Conference On Eye Laser Surgery Techniques Hailed Major Success

Muscat Eye Laser Centre Concludes Central Role in Two-Day Schwind User Meet in Oman

Muscat, 30 January 2010: Oman's first major conference on eye laser surgery techniques has been hailed a major success by Schwind who elected to host their annual user meet in the Sultanate because of the international reputation and expertise of locally-based Muscat Eye Laser Centre (MELC).

Schwind elected to hold their 12^th annual User Meet in the country because of the excellent results achieved by the MELC's Dr. Maria Clara Arbelaez has using Schwind's Amaris technology that has had more success in Oman than anywhere else in the world.

Commenting on the conference, Schwind CEO, said: "This has been our first visit to Oman and the User Meet has been an outstanding success. Our user Meetings have established themselves as a practice-oriented platform for intensive scientific experience allowing refractive surgeons with many years of experience to present and discuss with participants their treatment results regarding SCHWIND technologies

"Undoubtedly our star refractive surgeon this year has been Maria Clara Arbelaez from Muscat Eye Laser Centre. It was her outstanding results with our Amaris laser and her global reputation as one of the finest eye laser surgeons operating today that convinced us to hold this event in Oman.

"These international meets are hugely popular with the surgeons who use our equipment as it gives them the opportunity to share experiences with colleagues from all over the world."

This year the event attracted 150 delegates from 45 countries including representatives from across the Middle East and North Africa, China, Czech Republic, Germany, India and the Netherlands.

The two-day conference was held at the Barr Al Jissah Shangri-La Resort and Spa and the popularity of Dr. Maria meant she gave no less than 10 separate talks during the two day event.

During the conference MELC took on the role of the "main investigator" which means they are a considered a true expert user of eye laser technology who work as an industry consultant, make suggestions on modifications to technology and share best practice across the international eye surgery market.

Speaking about her participation, Dr. Maria said: "We are very proud that Schwind has chosen Oman for this meeting and I was delighted to share with colleagues from around the world the excellent work that is happening here at the Muscat Eye Laser Centre that has helped to put Oman on the international map as a centre for world-class treatment and services.

"The meeting has also given me an invaluable opportunity to share ideas and thinking with so many colleagues from the refractive surgery community that can only add to and help the work we are doing here in Oman."

Speaking at a press conference after the conference, MELC CEO Sameer Alawam said: "We thank Schwind for making the impossible the possible - with new state-of-the-art technology now available in Oman provided through Muscat Eye Laser Centre."

MELC is currently top of the Schwind international list as the most successful user of their Amaris technology that has been an important factor in helping with the 48,000 surgeries carried out by Dr. Maria and her team since the centre opened in 2002.

Commenting about Schwind at the press conferences Dr. Maria added: "The Amaris Laser integrates all features in eye technology resulting in an all-in-one enhanced feature offering patient's the best results with a full solution in the most advanced way."
