In a strategic move to enhance the crushing capacity of canola seeds, UAE's local and diversified conglomerate Al Ghurair Resources today announced its record setting canola crushing capacity of over 1.5 million metric tonnes a year. In partnership with the Edible Oils Company of Dubai Investments for the next 10 years, an added crushing capacity of 0.5 million MT/year enabled the utilization of their core capabilities together with Dubai Oil Mills in order to cater to the world's increasing demand for canola oil.

Says Essa Al Ghurair, Vice - Chairman of Al Ghurair, "Our major focus going forward lies in markets with growing protein and vegetable oil demand and in regions with prevailing young populations. The crushing plant is one of the key drivers in our expansion strategy in gearing towards market expansion. This partnership has brought greater synergy in our business."

New Vessel Loading Record

With enhanced logistical capabilities of handling huge shipments, the local conglomerates' capabilities include the handling of vessels of ships post panamax size. A vessel carrying 73,000 MT of canola from Canada broke a new world record and was received last month here at the Port of Jebel Ali. A currently shipment is currently underway.

New plant set-up

Also exciting expansion plans include a new plant being set up for the production of LECITHIN which so far is being imported in the region. Mostly used in bakeries, confectionaries and the feed industry, Lecithin will soon be manufactured for the first time in the UAE from a combination of the bi-products from the Dubai Oil Mills crushing plant.

Food Security in the UAE- In addition to the crushing of oil seeds, Al Ghurair Resources also plays an important role in food security with stocks of commodities such as edible oil from the Foods division and wheat from the Resources Division that can cater to the needs of the UAE population for a period of one to two months.

Green Ventures

In order to harness solar power at their production facilities, Al Ghurair Foods new project with Japan's Hitachi Plant Technologies is the first experimental project in the industry. Hot water is converted into chilled water for industrial use. If this project is viable, very shortly similar technology can be utilized at shopping centres, hotels etc. In addition to this, with ENOC, the company is working towards green fuel.
