Monterey, CA - We live in a global village with diversified cultures and languages, and a huge need for translation and interpretation as a bridge of communication among countries and peoples. The need for qualified professional translators and interpreters has never been stronger and more urgent.
The Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation of the Monterey Institute of International Studies, as one of the leading T&I schools in the world, has offered master's translation and interpretation programs in all the official languages of the United Nations except Arabic.
Until now.
Responding to a widely identified need for Arabic translators and interpreters, Dean Chunyan Bao and his colleagues will launch the Master of Arts in Arabic-English Translation and Interpretation program in fall 2008.
"Spoken by 200 million people, Arabic is one of the most widely used languages in the world and an official language of the United Nations," said Bao. "International organizations, including the UN and the European Union, government agencies in the United States, and other countries as well as businesses have a strong need for qualified translators and interpreters.
"Given the school's long-reputed tradition for the breadth of its language offerings, it is natural for the school to add an Arabic program in translation and interpretation. With the new Arabic program, GSTI will offer four master's degrees in eight languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Korean, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish."
The larger goal of the program, beyond teaching students how to translate and interpret between English and Arabic, is to help promote communication among countries and peoples to increase mutual understanding and reduce mistrust and fear. Only through a shared language and increased dialogue, said Bao, can we begin to understand one another on a higher level and recognize our commonalities.
"We are very clear about our objectives," said Bao. "We provide training in translation and interpretation at the highest professional standard. We'll have students coming from different parts of the world, but particularly from within the United States. GSTI faculty consists of professional translators and interpreters dedicated to their students, who will one day become their colleagues."
Students may pursue a master's degree in one of four areas: Translation, Translation and Interpretation, Conference Interpretation, or Translation/Localization Management. These are full-time two year degree programs on campus in Monterey, California. Candidates with high level skills in Arabic and English are encouraged to apply.
The Monterey Institute of International Studies, an affiliate of Middlebury College, is a private graduate university located in Monterey, CA.
