A new English for Health Care Students course was held by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI)-Medical University of Bahrain (MUB) to help students improve their comprehension.
The course will help bring students rapidly to the point that MUB hopes, through this program to improve students' abilities to perform academically and professionally once they comets their education.
"Since the coursework is in English, it is very important that students be able to read their texts with relative ease and have a high level of comprehension," said Fatima Wali, English Language Lecturer, RCSI-MUB.
She said that she knows from previous experience that students often find it difficult to keep up with all the new terminology they are introduced to during their foundation year.
"Our student body is international, coming from across the region and further abroad. Although the standard of our students is high, many of them need a little help in English to bring them in line with others for whom the language is a mother tongue. This course will teach them how to use these terms in a grammatically correct fashion, allowing them better comprehension in the classroom and while studying alone," said Wali.
The course is ideal for students pursuing graduate degrees in Health Care specializations such as medicine, nursing, physiotherapy and others. It includes vocabulary presentations and drills followed by readings and extensive reading comprehension exercises. It will also make heavy use of IT learning resources.
There will be a strong focus on grammatical points which, because of their difficulty and high frequency in medical writing are most likely to interfere with comprehension.
