In a joint effort, SSDS and Lilly launch "Managing Diabetes During Ramadan" Conversation Map™, an interactive tool targeting to help patients and physicians to better manage diabetes treatment during Ramadan in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Riyadh - Saudi Scientific Diabetes Society (SSDS) and Lilly joined hands to launch a new, interactive education tool in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia aiming to help patients achieve a safer Ramadan experience by encouraging conversation about the disease, its risks, and the importance of creating diabetes and Ramadan management plan, and what to do should complications arise.

Newly introduced "Managing Diabetes During Ramadan" Conversation Map is part of the Diabetes Conversation Education Program launched in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in June 2009 and has since educated almost 200 Diabetes Educators which in turn has been educating more than 1000 people with diabetes about the disease and its management.

More recently, several diabetes experts have recommended the development of a new Conversation Map -- one that would educate patients about the management of their condition during the holy month of Ramadan. In response, the new Conversation Map "Managing Diabetes During Ramadan" was designed to help improve diabetes management skills for both individuals with diabetes and the people who care for them.

Speaking at the launch event in Saudi, Chairman of SSDS Prof. Abdel Rahman Al Sheikh underlined the importance of managing diabetes during Ramadan for patients and the role of diabetes conversation tools. Prof. Abdel Rahman Al Sheikh emphasized that Saudi is ranked as 7th country with highest prevalence of diabetes according the IDF Atlas 5th edition and stated that health education is the cornerstone for preventing diabetes. He said that "All parties has to work hand in hand in order to prevent and treat diabetes as well as increase the awareness of both patients and the community as a whole."

Prof. Abdel Rahman Al Sheikh also stated that in that time of the year, they organize many educational sessions for diabetic patients to help them better manage their diabetes during the holy month of Ramadan in order to prevent complications.  "I believe, this cooperation with Lilly will help to leverage the competencies of health educators in Saudi Arabia especially before Ramadan and will help patients better manage their disease" he concluded.

In his speech, Lilly Managing Director Mohamed Nasser stated that "We discover and produce medicine for diabetes for more than 80 years in clear commitment to challenge diabetes; we also assume accountability in patient education. The Conversation Map™   is an important milestone in patient education journey and the new Conversation Map™   "Managing Diabetes During Ramadan" is an example of customizing global initiative for local needs. We are excited about launching this new education tool with SSDS".

Since their launch in 2008 globally, Diabetes Conversation Map education tools have become a meaningful addition to the diabetes patient education process. This small-group education approach allows people with diabetes to learn more about managing the disease better on their own, based on their physician's guidance.

Created by Healthy Interactions, a global leader in health education, in collaboration with the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), and with the support of Lilly Diabetes, the unique Diabetes Conversation Map education tools have been introduced in more than 110 countries, and are now available in 35 languages on seven different diabetes-related topics,

During last week the "Managing Diabetes During Ramadan" Conversation Map was introduced to the more than a 100 Diabetes Educators from different sectors in the kingdom (private, institution &MOH) with a training session given by a certified Expert trainer from IDF
