DUBAI: Neuro Spinal Hospital (NSH) announced that it has performed total elbow replacement surgery for one of its patients. This surgery is the first of its kind that has been performed in Dubai, the Northern Emirates and is a rare phenomenon across the globe.
The patient, a female Emirati national, had been suffering with rheumatoid arthritis for more than ten years which had affected her right elbow and the condition had progressively become worse. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation in the joints that affects mobility. The patient was in considerable pain and experienced fundamental limitations in movement. The patient was right handed and this condition restricted mobility and impacted her way of life. The patient could not comb her hair or stretch her arm more than 90 degrees.
The patient was diagnosed by a specialist team at NSH who performed the unique total elbow replacement surgery. This type of surgery is complicated as the patient had very friable joint and bones. Extra care was paramount during the procedure to avoid causing damage to the whole bone and protecting the ulnar nerve which if damaged would lead to a severe functional impairment of the hand. The surgery could only be performed with the presence of a Peripheral Nerve Surgeon and Orthopedic Surgeons. This multidisciplinary team exist within NSH and the complicated surgery was completed within three hours.
Dr Khaled Mohamed Diab, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon, commented, “The patient was in extreme discomfort. After diagnosis of her condition, a total elbow replacement was recommended. This is a complicated and delicate procedure as the bone is weak and soft tissue fragile. The surgery was a success and now the patient will undergo a period of rest where the elbow would be elevated for at least two weeks followed by intensive physiotherapy and rehabilitation program. The elbow will be progressively mobilized so that full mobility can be restored.”
Dr Debora Garozzo, Consultant Peripheral Nerve Surgeon, added, “Total elbow replacement surgery is very rare and this was the first time this type of procedure has been undertaken in the Northern Emirates. One of the main issues related to the procedure was the need to identify and mobilize the ulnar nerve in order to avoid any possible damage before proceeding to the replacement. Thus, the need for the orthopedic surgeons to work together with a peripheral nerve surgeon.”
NSH has built a reputation for providing the highest level of clinical care to patients and has been responsible for undertaking complex surgeries before.
