Abu Dhabi (Gulf Intelligence): Dr. Matar Al- Neyadi, the Undersecretary of the UAE Ministry of Energy and Industry, and Dr. Steve Griffith, who earned a PhD & MBA from MIT, led the eminent 2019 Academic Review Board charged with the responsibility of selecting this year’s winners of the Student Awards for the Advancement of Post Graduate Education in the UAE.

The six-members of the international Review board comprised of distinguished thinkers from all over the world, which also involved Dr. Martin J. Blunt, Professor of Petroleum Engineering at Imperial College London, and who collectively boast more than 100 years of higher education and academic experience with many of the world’s top 20 universities.

In the scoring process for the 2019 Award winners, the Board utilized a set of criteria to surface two Masters’ and two PhD students who stood above their peer group to act as ambassadors for the Advancement of Post-Graduate Education in the UAE, which is critical for the development of an in-country R&D ecosystem and knowledge economy.

“Over the last decade the UAE has demonstrated a brave commitment to innovative research and development, addressing the significant challenges of energy security, water security and cyber security,” said Sean Evers, Managing Partner of Gulf Intelligence and Chairman of the 2019 Academic Review Board. “More of that pioneering spirit and partnership, combined with new technologies, will be needed going forward as the country prepares to sustain and further advance the production of its resources,” he said.

The annual UAE Student Awards are held Under the Patronage of the country’s Minister of Energy & Industry HE Suhail Al-Mazrouei, and the presentation ceremony will be hosted once again at NYU Abu Dhabi on Jan. 9th, 2019. The most important policies for the UAE to prioritize to double the recovery rates of its oil reservoirs to 70% should include talent development, technology and partnership, according to the vast majority of 200 energy industry executives polled in a GIQ Survey.

The role that Post-Graduate Education plays in innovation ecosystems is to discover and invent the future in part through research, in part through education, and in part through active efforts to move university-derived ideas into industry. The most important product of Post-Graduate Studies is educated students and capable researchers.

The 2019 Academic Review Board also included Prof. Mohammed Daqaq, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at NYU Abu Dhabi, and Prof. Nidal Hilal, Global Professor of Engineering and Director of NYUAD Water Research Center, and Dr. Abdulrahman Alraeesi, Director, Emirates Center for Energy and Environmental Research, UAE University.

The more the UAE’ s brightest minds have access to funding, R&D facilities and support from the commercial market to realize home-grown innovations, the faster the Emirates’ will transform into a knowledge-based economy with global influence. Recognition must be given to the UAE’s young talent aiming to resolve fundamental challenges that deepen the Sultanate’s global foothold as a pioneering nation.
