A delegation of ten UAE entrepreneurs from the Mohammed Bin Rashid Establishment for SME Development (MBRE) will be heading to Vancouver, Canada as part of the first 'SME CLEANTECH Mission', to be held from March 24-26 during GLOBE 2010, the world's leading and most successful 'business of the environment' trade fair and conference.
His Excellency Abdul Baset Al Janahi, CEO-MBRE commented, "The cleantech mission is in-line with the vision of the UAE leadership and the national strategy for 2021, where small and medium enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role in supporting sustainable development by delivering the technology, products and services that help achieve a balance between economic, social and environmental benefits." He also stressed on the importance of participation in international specialised events and forging partnerships to gain knowledge and expertise, which would enable SMEs to keep pace with the achievements of the UAE in the cleantech sector; from adoption of green building standards to hosting IRENA, the International Renewable Energy Agency, in addition to other commercial and lifestyle initiatives.
The 'SME CLEANTECH Mission' is conceived in association with S.S. Lootah Canada, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the S.S Lootah Group and GLOBE Foundation, Canada, the organisers of the event. The mission aims to create new business opportunities through international cooperation and learn about the latest innovations in energy, waste management and recycling among other cleantech areas. It also aims to understand international best practices in strategy and policy formulation in key business sectors like sustainable urban development, retail, transportation and tourism which are witnessing a huge transformation to reduce their impact on the environment while operating profitably.
Eng. Yahya Saeed Lootah, CEO of S.S. Lootah Group said, "We are very happy to collaborate with MBRE and support the 'SME CLEANTECH Mission' to encourage innovation and develop interest among SMEs in sustainable development. The commercial opportunities in the cleantech sector will further empower UAE entrepreneurs to compete globally and enable them to contribute positively to national and regional growth."
The clean technology sector or 'Cleantech' has been one of the fastest growing sectors globally in recent years in terms of number of companies and institutional and venture capital investments. The sector is characterised by technologies, products and services that are competitive and offer tangible economic benefits besides environmental benefits. It is a diversified sector whose applications include energy generation, storage and efficiency, waste water, transportation, recycling and other areas in manufacturing and agriculture.
