United Arab Emirates - According to statistics issued today by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery Hospital (AACSH), the number of men across the GCC having cosmetic surgery procedures is on the rise, with the hospital witnessing a 12% increase in male patients in the past year.

"Bodybuilding Sculpture" liposuction - during which fat is removed from areas such as the stomach, chest and flanks to create the appearance of more defined muscle - is currently the most popular procedure amongst the hospital's male patients, making up 26% of all male patient procedures.

Gynecomastia - during which fat is removed from the chest area - and the minimally invasive neck lift "double chin" correction follow as the hospital's top requested surgical cosmetic treatments amongst its male patients, with the "Bodybuilding Sculpture" liposuction procedure seeing a 14% YOY increase in enquiries from 2014 to 2015 and "gynecomastia" and minimal invasive "double chin" removal seeing 21% and 14% increases in enquiries respectively.

The hospital has also witnessed an increase in men enquiring into non-surgical procedures, with 26% of Botox procedures carried out this year attributed to male patients. With Botox the most popular non-surgical procedure amongst men, making up 22% of all non-surgical enquiries, laser-assisted beard remodelling (21%) and PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) treatment for hair loss  (16%) follow suit in popularity. The AACSH's wellness clinic - offering therapies such as reflexology, colonic hydrotherapy and nutrition plans - has noted a 21% increase in the past year alone in male patients seeking nutritional advice from the hospital's in-house nutritionist.

Despite the majority of female patients visiting the hospital predominantly travelling from across the UAE, a considerable number of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery Hospital's male patients travel from across the GCC for their procedures, with 19% visiting from KSA and 14% from Qatar.

Commenting on the results, Dr. Firas Hamdan, cosmetic surgeon at AACSH, said: "We have witnessed a steady year-on-year increase in men visiting the hospital for cosmetic procedures due to male cosmetic surgery no longer seen as such a stigma in society.

"We are seeing increasing numbers of men visiting the hospital enquiring into what we call the "Bodybuilding sculpture" procedure, during which new liposuction techniques are used to remove fat and 'sculpt' abs, creating a six-pack. The results are instant and the procedure is less invasive than other liposuction techniques, making it a perfect solution for men who exercise regularly but are unable to shift stubborn areas of fat," added Dr Hamdan.

As a leader in its field and the first hospital to open in Dubai Healthcare City, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery Hospital (AACSH) offers a comprehensive medical and cosmetic facility that accommodates the needs of the region by providing optimal care, services, training, and public awarenessin the field of aesthetic medicine.
