Abu Dhabi, UAE: June 4, 2012- Mafraq Hospital, owned and operated by the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA), last week showcased its contribution to the UAE healthcare sector by participating in Laboratory Professionals Week - a branch of an international initiative that is celebrated by laboratory professionals across the world - running from May 27th-31st. With nearly two million tests performed in 2011 - 30 per cent of which provided results within one hour - the facility is considered one of the primary clinical laboratories in the region.
With an estimated 250 medical students and healthcare professionals in attendance, the professional development week is an event dedicated to pathology specialists and their work. The event this year focused on diabetes awareness and was designed to showcase the achievements of the Emirate's state-of-the-art facilities, best-in-class staff and commitment to patient care.

A range of activities and events were scheduled to run throughout the week, including an open house and tour of the laboratories, a film screening of a Mafraq-produced and directed feature on the organisation's lab staff, a glucose testing booth, a diabetes education section and a unique 'Meet the Pathologist' feature where interesting cases and issues are discussed between physicians and lab pathologists. Each activity was specially designed to offer participants an engaging and hands-on overview of the department.
This is the first year that multiple SEHA facilities will collaborate on the initiative; Mafraq Hospital participated along with Al Ain Hospital, Al Rahba Hospital, and Sheikh Khalifa Medical Centre (SKMC). The unification of SEHA laboratories marks the beginning of a campaign introduced by the SEHA Clinical Support Service Laboratory Council to connect hospital professionals with the public.
The Mafraq Hospital Laboratory is staffed with a total of 115 lab professionals, including pathologists, senior clinical scientists, supervisors, technologists, technicians and phlebotomists.
