Dubai, June 29th 2004: Aishwarya Rai, Bollywood megastar and Longines 'Ambassador of Elegance', was among the select few global celebrities invited to carry the Olympic Torch during its journey to Athens.

"We are very proud to have our Longines Ambassador Aishwarya Rai participate in such an important event," said Hikmat Trablousi, Regional Brand Manager at Longines. She is a household name for countless people in the Middle East and synonymous with beauty and elegance; she represents perfectly what Longines stands for."

On June 2, 2004 the Olympic Flame left Athens and began its global journey. The Flame will cover a distance of more than 78,000 kilometres, visiting all continents and 34 cities worldwide. New Delhi is the sixth city on the global route and it's the first time that India has participated in the relay.

The Athens 2004 Olympic Torch Relay started at New Delhi's historic monument, the famed Qutab Minar, where it was first handed over by Suresh Kalmadi, Member of Parliament and President of the Indian Olympic Committee, to Ajit Pal Singh, former captain of the Indian hockey team. The run ended with Anjali Ved Pathak Bhagwat, India's well-known shooting marksmen.

Huge crowds followed the runners as they participated in the memorable relay. Aishwarya Rai carried the Olympic torch from Janpath to the Eastern Court. The torch was carried over 33 kilometres by more than 100 runners in New Delhi.

In 1999, Aishwarya became the ambassadress of the inimitable Longines elegance, expressed by the world-renowned Swiss watch brand. Since she has been elected Miss World in 1994, she became active in social work and charity. She placed her own eyes at the disposal of the India Eye Transplant Bank. By lending her voice to the Association and thanks to her consistent commitment, she effectively promotes this cause.
