Digital leader introduces array of appliances to promote healthy households

Dubai, July 29, 2004 - Global and regional digital leader LG Electronics has successfully applied innovative nano technology to a wide range of home appliances, assuring customers of healthier households.

LG has adopted the technology to provide breakthrough benefits such as antibacterial and deodorisation features in air conditioners, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners and washing machines. These environment friendly appliances also increase efficiency and productivity. In a washing machine integrated with nano technology, nano sized silver particles provide antibacterial action and sterilises clothes and water during the laundry processes. Bacteria are eliminated as it comes into direct contact with the silver particles on the surface of the washing tub.

The antibacterial properties of the silver nano particles has enabled LG secure approvals for quality and safety from accredited international bodies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Japan's SIAA and Korea's Testing and Research Institute for Chemical Industry, among others.

"We want to promote healthy households by developing home appliances that are not only efficient but also good for health. LG is increasing R & D investments every year to reach US$3.38 billion in 2007 and more than US$5.1 billion in 2010, making a grand total of US$25.3 billion spent on R&D by 2010. Our customers are becoming health conscious and we are developing products in line with their needs," said K. H. Kim, President of LG Electronics, Middle East and Africa Operations.

To prevent bacterial contamination, the dust case of the LG CYKING, a cyclonic bag less vacuum cleaner, is coated with nano sized silver particles. The anti-bacterial case and the absence of a paper bag enhance the vacuum cleaner's appeal to the health-conscious customer.

LG's air conditioners run on a healthy nano plasma air-purifying system using the carbon nano technology. A nano ball, measuring between 200-500 nanometres, is attached inside the air conditioners and the carbon particles enable these home appliances effectively absorb odour particles from the atmosphere.

Using the bio silver and bio shield technology, LG's new multi media refrigerator is coated with nano sized silver particles to prevent bacterial intrusion. A nano carbon ball is also attached to this refrigerator to eliminate odour. The carbon nano ball is a kit, filled with nano sized carbon particles, which has been attached to the interior of the refrigerator and the carbon particles absorb odor particles.

Appliances using nano technology are already available in several markets and LG will continue with the roll out of these products in other markets.
