The 3R 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle 'educational Workshop program focused on raising knowledge of issues and solutions that impact the environment

Kuwait, 26th January, 2010: Kuwait Shell recently held the 3R "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" workshops program at the New English School (NES). The workshops were delivered over a period of one week, in collaboration with Mad Science, which is an independent science enrichment provider that delivers hands on educational science experiences for children. The 3R workshops served as a platform for over 300 elementary students to help them explore the concept of environment and realize that they can make a difference if they implemented the 3R key principles of reducing, reusing and recycling a wide range of materials

Mr. Alastair Hannay, The New English School's head teacher junior department said: "The 3R workshops taught the students the importance of recycling and waste management programs, and allowed them to directly experience how waste affects and pollutes the environment in the long run.  This is a wonderful teaching initiative and we can't thank Kuwait Shell enough for sharing it with us.  We have a longstanding focus on the environment as part of the curriculum at NES and this was a new and engaging way of looking at the subject."

The 3R workshops began with a brief introduction to the oil and gas industry, and a description of Shell's line of business. Hands on activities and interactive demonstrations were used to illustrate students' roles in improving not only their school environment, but also the environment in Kuwait in general.

Kuwait Shell Chairman, Mr. Ahmed Mouti concluded: "The underlying principles of our 3R 'Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle' workshops are in line with what we are trying to do here in Kuwait - make the best of our natural resources in order to minimize waste and help reduce any negative impact on the environment. Each one of us has a role to play and Kuwait Shell is committed to continue to help educate as many children as possible about the benefits of being environmentally sensible and doing what they can to preserve their surroundings."

"The 3R workshops made us realize the importance of taking responsibility over how much material we use and be conciouse about where we dispose our waste, our collective effort will result in greener parks, cleaner beaches and clearer air. Also, this will preserve the planet for future generations." added a group of attending students."

Shell's partnership with Kuwait dates back to the late 1940s when the company first brought Kuwait's crude oil to international markets. From those early days Shell's business with Kuwait developed to include exploration, oil trading, lubricants, technical services and chemicals sales.  Shell has also been involved in joint studies on Kuwait's upstream sector since the mid 1990s. Shell staffs currently involved with Kuwait are located in the country's refineries and with Shell Lubricants' distributors. In Kuwait's refineries much has already been achieved by Shell Global Solutions in partnership with Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC).

Shell has a number of international joint ventures with Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (KUFPEC) and in 2005 extended international activities with Kuwait with the signature of an MOU with Kuwait Petroleum International (KPI) to develop projects in global markets.

Recently, Shell International Trading Middle East Limited (Shell) has signed a Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) for the provision of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) into Kuwait. Shell aims to secure a longer term LNG supply contract.
