One of the World's Most Powerful Technology Brands Deployed on More Than Two Billion Devices
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Developed ten years ago by a team of Sun Microsystems' developers in Santa Clara, the heart of California's Silicon Valley, the Java programming language has become one of the most widely used technologies the world over. From Motorola handhelds to Acer laptops, Oracle solutions and countless websites, Java has become the technology of choice for the global IT community.
"Java technology is everywhere - it's a simple phrase behind an astonishing reality," said Graham Porter, Marketing Manager, Sun Microsystems Middle East and North Africa. "The Java philosophy - write once, run anywhere - means that a Java-based programme can run on a PC, on a mobile phone, in your car or even on your internet fridge. Anything with a microprocessor can run Java, and the take-up of the technology has been tremendous."
"But it doesn't stop there. Java has shipped on more than 600 million PCs, and they access more than seven million Web pages containing dynamic content built with Java software. You'll find Java technology on just about any device these days, connecting it to a network and allowing users to communicate with each other," he added.
Java usage has become so widespread that in a recent survey conducted by Sun, 86 percent of consumers recognized the Java brand. In addition one in three consumers will buy a product with the Java brand, rather than a comparable product that does not utilize Java technology.
"Even in the IT industry and among our competitors, Java has been recognized as the leading programming language on the planet. Last year Sun even received a royalty fee from one of the world's largest IT corporations, to use Java technology for the next ten years, demonstrating how Java really does set the standards for the rest of the industry," added Porter.
In the Middle East, Java has become the programming language of choice from the GCC, to North Africa. The region also boasts a development community running into the tens of thousands, promoted in part by Sun's own educational programme that provides students with advanced Java training and industry-standard instruction. To provide even more choice to programmers, Sun has Arabized Java, enabling products to be developed by the region's IT industry for the population of the Middle East.
"Sun will continue to make IT simpler to understand and use through promoting Java. We have already seen a fantastic number of downloads, over two million, for our latest free Java development tool, and our java.com website receives more than ten million visitors a month. Java can only go from strength to strength as IT becomes central in the lives of this region's population," added Porter.
