• Partnership with Voices of Future Generations for the Middle East to drive future growth in the region as the event marks the 30th anniversary of Roots & Shoots

Dubai, UAE: Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots celebrates UAE and UK students’ achievements and the initiative’s 30th anniversary with virtual awards ceremony.

In the presence of HH Sheikha Maytha bint Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Goodwill Ambassador for Roots & Shoots UAE, Dr Jane Goodall and VIPs, the event, which was hosted by New York University Abu Dhabi, showcased the achievements of students, with the support of sponsors and partners.

Student groups from both the UK and the UAE presented their projects, from sustainability to animal welfare, with the intent to make attendees motivated and determined to create a better future for our planet.

HH Sheikha Maytha bint Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, said: “I am filled with admiration for these young people who have remained committed to creating a better world for all of us, in spite of all the challenges the last year has brought. The Sustainable Development Goals have identified partnerships as key, and we know that bringing our two initiatives together will help both grow, with a huge positive impact on our planet.”

“We are very excited this year to be hosting a celebration event as part of our Twinning Programme with our members in both the UK and the UAE who have demonstrated remarkable progress, despite living through the challenges of a Pandemic. We are also very excited to be launching our new partnership with Voices of Future Generations in the UAE. We very much look forward to celebrating these achievements with other member schools, sponsors and partners,” said Tara Golshan, Executive Director, Education, Jane Goodall Institute.

Following the twinning of Roots & Shoots UAE and Voices of Future Generations for the Middle East, the Emirates Literature Foundation in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute, will lead the outreach for both initiatives in tandem, with an aim to create learning opportunities, field trips, and science projects.

Together the two initiatives provide a comprehensive sustainability-themed path with a focus on the SDGs for children to follow from a young age up to adulthood.

About Roots & Shoots

Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots programme is about making positive change happen – for our communities, for animals and for the environment, by providing teachers with exciting and inspiring activities that their students can get involved in.

These resources offer opportunities to learn about humanitarian, animal and environmental issues affecting our world, share insights, ideas and inspiration for making positive change happen.

The individual efforts of thousands of young people are making monumental change. With an overall theme of learning to live in peace and harmony with animals, the environment and each other, they learn to respect others and break down barriers between nations, religions, cultures, old and young, rich and poor, and between humans and the natural world. And they understand that every individual has a role to play and makes a difference every day.

About Voices of Future Generations

Voices of Future Generations is a unique writing initiative created to promote Sustainability and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. HH Sheikha Hissa Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the Goodwill Ambassador for the initiative for the Gulf Region. The initiative was first launched internationally in 2014, and in 2019 in the Gulf Region.

Through a creative writing competition, it encourages children age 8 – 12 to engage with the Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child by incorporating one or more of them in their stories.

The Voices of Future Generations Initiative was launched on the 25th Anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child by a consortium of partners including World Future Council, Centre for International Sustainable Development Law, the Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights in the Government of Hungary, and the Trust for Sustainable Living, under the patronage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
