21 April 2004

Gulf Business Machines (GBM) Abu Dhabi, Sole Distributor for IBM Products and services in the Gulf countries excluding Saudi Arabia, jointly hosted an IT security seminar with IBM and Cisco Systems in Abu Dhabi on 21st April 2004.

Akram Jawhary, General Manager, GBM Abu Dhabi, opened the event by warmly welcoming the guests.   Experts from GBM, IBM and Cisco Systems presented various IT Security related topics.

This event highlighted the IT Security dilemma to the attending audience which comprised IT and Network Security Managers from leading Government and private institutions.   The experts discussed how jointly developed processes and solutions have been created to enable companies to deploy a comprehensive security infrastructure, which at the same time simplifies support and reduces costs.

”In today's e-business economy, network and IT security is the largest concern of IT managers.  Many existing solutions typically address only parts of the security landscape and this creates a huge workload as well as costs in evaluating, installing, integrating, supporting and managing all security products,” said Mr Jawhary.

“IBM and Cisco have together developed end-to-end security architecture solutions which dramatically reduce risk and exposure in our interconnected world, and greatly simplify the operation and management of the IT security infrastructure,” he added.   “What this means is that being a part of the global economy is now facilitated through a networking and IT security relationship between GBM, IBM and Cisco Systems.  This relationship enables GBM to provide value-added network and security solutions to businesses, industries and governments in the region, and in so doing, allows them to securely connect their networks to the Internet.”

Such a strategic alliance ensures the provision of value-added multi-vendor security solutions for customers.   GBM’s powerful ‘Networking & Security Solutions’ offering - developed over the past five years - is enhanced by the benefits of the IBM / Cisco Systems alliance formed in 1999, by GBM’s ‘GOLD’ partner status with Cisco, and by its award as ‘Best Cisco Partner’ for 2002 and 2003.

“GBM has been helping clients across the region develop their own security strategies, implement defences and provide protection against intrusion at every level by designing customised security architecture which follow IBM’s Method for Architecting Security Solutions (MASS) and Cisco’s SAFE methodology.    The implementation of such solutions by GBM includes consultancy, design and implementation services based on ISO 17799,” added James Buckett, Tivoli Technical Sales Manager, IBM Central Europe, Middle East and Africa, IBM.

A wide range of products & services are used to secure networks.   These can include firewalls, Intrusion Detection Systems, content filtering solutions, IT systems security solutions, anti-virus solutions, and physical security components, among others.

GBM also provides IT security policy consulting services.   These consider the development of a framework, core IT security policies and practices, assistance with implementation and on-going support.

“GBM is proud to have been able to bring this event to Abu Dhabi as part of our commitment to sharing the latest developments in these areas with our customers.  Our specialised security consultants are among the best in the industry and hold leading IT security certifications, which include CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) and IBM IT Security Consultant certifications,” concluded Mr Jawhary.

GBM’s sophisticated multi-layer security implementations in mission-critical areas, include its work for the government, telecommunications, aviation, banking and petroleum sectors, among others.
