23rd January 2011, Manama, BAHRAIN - Bahrain has steadfastly made its mark in the area of health tourism, which is recognised as one of the fastest growing segments of international tourism. In this field, the German Orthopaedic Hospital based in Manama, has played a significant role in establishing the Kingdom as one of the more professional, highly advanced centres in the region.
Dr. Professor Heinz Roettinger, the visionary founder and head of Bahrain's German Orthopaedic Hospital, says, "Since we opened our doors here in Bahrain as recently as 2010, I am pleased to report that we have treated no less than a total of 8244 patients altogether. And what's more our success rate is 100%". GOH patients come from countries as diverse as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan, UK, Germany, Austria, Finland, Bulgaria, Mexico, Argentina and the USA.
GOH's latest international patient is Ms Gisela Kettinger from Senden, Germany; a small city 225km southeast of Frankfurt. She says, "I made a carefully planned decision to come to Bahrain's German Orthopaedic Hospital after thoroughly researching my options. There are many good hospitals in Germany but honestly I can say, Dr. Heinz Roettinger's reputation, in this field is unsurpassed. And after I studied the facilities and after-care quality I knew that Bahrain and GOH are the right place for me, especially as I need a Hip Arthoplasty revision on the left side."
Prof. Dr. Roettinger, is among the most experienced and well-reputed Orthopaedic surgeons in the world and in particular for the technique of MIS (Minimal Invasive Surgery). An expert in Total Hip Replacement, he was a natural choice for Ms Gisela Kettinger's partial Hip Arthoplasty. Dr. Heinz has more than 20 years' experience in the field of Total Hip Replacement (THR) using MIS, and it is this experience and expertise that are behind his and the GOH team's incredible success rate of 100% in cases relating to Hip & Knee Replacements and Spine & Trauma, including a rare case of spinal tumour removal.
It is thanks to facilities as advanced as the German Orthopaedic Hospital, that today Bahrain is highly rated on the list of medical tourism destinations; other factors include the Kingdom's existing health care system, general lifestyle and first-rate post-operative care. Also, by western standards it is all very reasonably priced, especially when compared to the USA and Europe and even with some of the other GCC countries.
According to the Al Taameer MENA Hospitality Report in 2011, "(the) Medical tourism sector in the Middle East is gaining credence, led by the lower cost of treatment and the increase in the number of hospitals that ensure quality medical care. Furthermore, countries in the Middle East are teaming with international medical institutions and associations to boost their medical tourism sectors. Another study published by the Oxford Business Group, The Bahrain Report 2011, claims, "...the private sector is expected to grow exponentially. The introduction of a mandatory private insurance scheme and more generally the rising population both have the potential to serve as a major foreign investment draw. As the sector expands both private and public hospitals are expected to improve ... this is demonstrated with the opening of the specialist Orthopaedic Hospital GOH in 2010 and the Bahrain based and head of surgery and founding global expert Professor Dr Heinz Roettinger"
However, as Dr. Heinz adds, "More than quality hospitals and first class facilities, it is patient care that determines success. And the wellbeing of the patient and those who come with them rests with, among other factors, their comfort levels. The Government of Bahrain's welcoming approach as well as the many support facilities and touristic attractions in Bahrain put everyone in a happy frame of mind. And a happy mind, as we know, helps with healing."
