Hospitality design has seen significant changes over the last decade. As new hotels are erected and old properties are refurbished, trends in design evolve in conjunction with advancements in engineering, technology, art and style. While architectural design has long been known to capture the essence of different cultures and civilizations over time, hotel design must now appeal to a wide variety of guests and travelers. From religious sites, to national monuments, museums and modern skyscrapers, thoughtfully-designed structures are an artistic reflection of the way people utilize space, and this remains one of the main highlights of global travel today.
Rising travel trends such as wellness tourism, adventure travel and curated experiences have inspired hotel chains to evolve their design philosophy to suit the lifestyles and beliefs of their travelers. To keep up some of the latest advancements in tourism travel, brands are seeing new means of designing spaces. InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG®) is one such brand that offers travellers the opportunity to seek new experiences through unique architecture, be inspired on their travels or just explore some of the region’s best designed properties.
InterContinental Dubai Marina
InterContinental Dubai Marina is one property that makes a striking first impression and leaves a lasting impact on guests with its fascinating contemporary art installations, comprising gigantic Giacometti-inspired sculptures, and subtle engravings and paintings.
From its well defined structural boundaries to the clever placement of fine furnishing, the minimalist design of InterContinental Dubai Marina complements stunning marina views to convey the ultimate expression of modern luxury. The dominating presence of high ceilings allows natural light to flood the artfully designed interiors, accentuating the clean lines and intriguing textures that are brought to life by a considerable selection of natural materials – stone, marble and wood.
InterContinental Hong Kong
The InterContinental Hong Kong is another property from IHG® prized for its impressive harbour views. The hotel is home to Asia’s most spectacular Presidential Suite; complete with an expansive rooftop terrace that houses a luxurious infinity swimming pool and Jacuzzi, suite guests can bask in the sunshine on a warm day and enjoy unrivalled skyline views.
Drawing reference to the stunning sunset views on Victoria Harbour, bronze, gold, champagne and silver shades are used to create a warm and lush interior for the lobby at InterContinental Hong Kong.
Iconic pieces of art play a key role in driving visually appealing content for travelers to share with their networks on social media.
The InterContinental Hong Kong features a dramatic art installation takes center stage in the hotel lobby. Doubling as a communal bar table, the unique art piece is made of rich materials imported from Africa and America, and designed with a subtle Yin and Yang influence. Reminiscent of the movement on the harbour, the finish of the table is a high gloss lacquer that reflects the dynamic lighting of the space, creating an illusion that it is floating within the lobby.
InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram
Putting culture and heritage at the forefront, the InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram resort blends world-class luxury with a renascent Coromandel style, located within close proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mahabalipuram. Surrounded by tall granite walls, the resort’s unconventional layout is a bold reinterpretation of South Indian temple architecture, as seen at the revered Shore Temple nearby.
Reminiscent of the Brutalist architecture movement, the resort is characterized by angular geometries that appear softened by subdued lighting at nightfall, as the evening sea breeze sends a wave of invigorating scent from the frangipani bushes across the property.
Luxurious, spacious rooms offer respite and contemplation, while the central courtyard; lotus pond; temple tank-inspired swimming pool; and pillared hall embrace the authenticity of Mahabalipuram’s history and local flavor.
IHG® currently operates 271 hotels across six brands in AMEA, including InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Hotel Indigo and Staybridge Suites with a further 149 hotels in the development pipeline due to open within the next three to five years.
