Doha - IGTC - Chubb Fire has completed an intensive, two-month safety training program for 4,000 workers at the Mesaieed plant of Qatalum Aluminum, a joint venture company formed by Qatar Petroleum and the Norwegian-based company, Hydro. The program focused on recognizing fall hazards and utilizing safety techniques and equipment at heights. IGTC - Chubb Fire began instruction at the beginning of November and concluded the program on December 20th.
The program addressed safety concerns for workers functioning at heights and educated worker-students regarding the major causes of falls, hazard identification and assessment, personal protection equipment and fall protection systems. The instructors also focused their lectures on fall arrest hazards, fall clearances, anchor points, inertia reels, scaffolds and ladders.
IGTC - Chubb Fire taught the course in collaboration with the Australasian based M&O Global, a company which provides world-class off-shore safety, maritime and emergency response training for the oil and gas industry on a world-wide basis. The program was led by four senior instructors and three translators to address the work force of English, Arabic and Indian-language speaking workers. The training began with theory and advanced to practice on-site. 540 trainees per week tackled the course matter with two classes training simultaneously.
Rami Al Batrawi, General Manager, IGTC - Chubb Fire Qatar, said of the safety program's success, "Chubb Fire Qatar is delighted to have had an opportunity to share our world-class safety expertise with Qatalum and to partner with M&O Global to do so. Safety is fundamental and the intensive, two-month program we created with M&O Global for Qatalum stressed the day-to-day security and safety dangers these workers encounter. The theoretical and hands-on programs were both critical to safety at Qatalum's Mesaieed plant as a whole and also to each individual worker."
He added, "This program was so successful for all involved. We feel the worker-students learned so much that will contribute significantly to the day-to-day safety at Qatalum's site that we are planning another program to address the remainder of the workers in January. "
Qatalum employs over 13,000 workers at its Mesaieed location. When completed, the Qatalum Aluminum plant will have a first phase capacity of 585,000 tons of primary aluminum, all of which will be shipped as value-added aluminum casthouse products. At the end of August of this year, the plant was 33% completed with civil works on-going.
IGTC - Chubb Fire Qatar is one of the global leaders in fire protection, safety and security solutions. It was recently re-awarded its ISO certificates by external auditors Moody International subsequent to its February audits.
