Hyder Consulting has provided design support to the Government of Abu Dhabi for over 35 years. The company has been instrumental in developing the sewerage, drainage and irrigation networks for Abu Dhabi. In addition, Hyder has had extensive involvement in the provision of public health infrastructure services including sewerage and storm water drainage networks and the provision of facilities for sewage treatment.

Hyder Consulting has a long-standing relationship with the Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services Company (ADSSC) which began in 1974 when Hyder (John Taylor & Sons at that time) was engaged by the Government of Abu Dhabi to prepare the sewerage master plan for the city of Abu Dhabi as well as undertake the design and construction supervision of the master plan and subsequent works. The Sewerage Projects Committee (SPC) was established by the Government to manage the sewerage works which became known as the Abu Dhabi Sewerage Scheme. Hyder was appointed as the scheme's main consultant.

During the period 1974-2005, Hyder completed numerous projects on behalf of SPC including: trunk and subsidiary sewerage networks for Abu Dhabi Island, Mussafah, Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD) Phase 1, Mafraq, Baniyas, Khalifa Cities B & C, Umm Al Nar and part of Shawamikh including several pumping stations of various sizes; Phase 1 of Mafraq STP; treated sewage effluent transmission and main distribution system including several reservoirs and pumping stations; trunk surface water drainage systems including sea outfalls for Mussafah, ICAD Phase 1 and Khalifa Cities B & C; and rehabilitation of pumping stations and sewerage networks in those areas.

ADSSC was established in June 2005 as the only licensed sewerage services company in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Hyder is currently providing design and construction supervision services for AED 3 billion worth of capital works on behalf of ADSSC.

Chris Venemore, Managing Director - Environment and Water at Hyder Consulting, said "ADSSC has recognized that the expected growth in development will create new challenges for the future. Hyder is already working with the Government to assist in the expansion of the public health network and provide services in support of the many private land developments that are to be constructed in the coming years."

Venemore added "Over the last 35 years the Government, first through SPC and then through ADSSC, has instigated a major capital investment programme in underground and largely invisible services; services that provide a benefit to all the community 365 days per year, every year. Hyder Consulting is proud to have played its part in the development of this major advance in public health services for Abu Dhabi."
