11 March 2013 Doha, Qatar
As Qatar's construction rapidly develops, ensuring compliance with health, safety and environment standards is of critical importance. Regulators, developers, contractors and consultants gathered for the HSE in Construction Qatar summit today to help foster safe and eco-friendly building nationwide.
Held at the Oryx Rotana Hotel in Doha, Mr Ahmed Al-Abdulla, Chairman of Qatar Project Management (QPM), opened the conference, "We hope this conference works to create a legacy in health, safety and environment standards on construction sites in Qatar. It's important that leaders and experts understand how to execute safety operations and ways to adopt green practices, both nationally and beyond."
Also in attendance at the gathering was Mr. Mohammad Ahmed Al Sayed, Director of Doha Municipality at the Ministry of Municipality & Urban Planning, who gave the keynote address. His speech stressed how the conference can advance the nation's sustainable future.
"Hosting such an event in Doha is crucial because it brings health, safety and environment experts together for collaboration on the most pressing issues facing the countries construction and development," he explained. "Such cooperation comes at an important time for the nation as we work towards realising the Qatar National Vision 2030," he added.
To help promote compliance with building regulations Mr. Des Leamy, Divisional H&S Manager at PM-CM International KEO International Consultants, gave a presentation on ways to prevent future construction accidents through close data analysis.
KEO, for example, uses an online collaborative platform for all of its clients, managers and contractors. The system, which ultimately becomes a document library for all members of the construction project, allows building issues to be raised, reviewed and analysed.
"We must take our time when assessing data. This is critical to health, safety and environment construction management," explained Mr Leamy. "Data analysis is not a one-size-fits-all approach, we must have an accurate summary of facts that benefit the particular organisation. Once you have identified the problem, you can recognise solutions for building safely and sustainably."
Other presentations included preventive strategies for reducing heat stress amongst construction workers, emergency and accident management and how to foster safety leadership within management teams.
To provide those in attendance insight into construction projects in countries abroad, a talk was also given that explored health and safety challenges faced by the London Organising Committee of the Olympics and Paralympic Games.
In partnership with QPM, the annual event was a unique networking and knowledge-sharing platform for health and safety officers, as well as project managers across leading Qatari construction companies.
