Major works to include over 200 kilometres of Water Reuse pipelines

Haya Water today awarded the first construction contract in the Al Amerat Water Reuse Project Code named Contract A2 - for installation of sewer and treated effluent pipelines in Al Amerat Western Area. The significant project was awarded to joint venture comprised of The Arab Contractors and National United Engineering & Contracting Co. LLC. The 47 month contract, valued at RO 28,895,729.525, will deliver a wide range of services to the Sultanate, including 23 km of sewers, 140 km of laterals and riders, 7 km of Treated Effluent line installation and 43 km of House Connections encapsulating 2,900 properties. This project will be handed over to Haya Water in August 2016.
The Contract was signed at Haya Water headquarters, at Bait Haya, by HE Eng. Sultan Bin Hamdoon Al Harthy, Chairman of Haya Water, and Mr. Hossam Adel Samad Fayed, Regional Manager, representing the Joint Venture Contractor (JV).
His Excellency Eng. Sultan Bin Hamdoon Al Harthy, Chairman of Haya Water expressed his pleasure during the signing of the Contract and remarked that when the works are completed, the residents of Al Amerat will benefit from a modernised and truly world class waste water network system, and a system which will enable efficient usage of the treated effluent for commercial and irrigation uses. His Excellency said that the Al Amerat Water Reuse project is being treated as one of the major and most prestigious projects of the Muscat Governorate. As such, the Government represented by Haya Water is expected to derive major advantages by the time of this valuable project's completion.
The CEO of Haya Water, Eng. Hussain Hassan Ali Abdul Hussain, mentioned that Contract A2 is the biggest of the three network construction contracts identified in the Project, and when completed, will cater to nearly 2,900 properties in the western area of Wilayat Al Amerat. He explained that the waste water network aims at gradually reducing, and finally eliminating, the current complex system of transporting waste water from a property's septic tanks via tankers, thereby benefiting the population, and simplifying the collection of revenues from the various properties. He added that early next year, Haya Water plans to award three more contracts - two for networks and one for the Sewage Treatment Plant, and concluded that Haya Water is looking forward to achieving this milestone.
Mr. Fayed, representing the joint venture contractors, said that they were pleased to be awarded the contract which represents a milestone in the development of Al Amerat's western area in the Al Amerat Water Reuse Project. They are keen to fulfil their commitment and deliver the contracted works to the best in their capacity, with diligence and professionalism. They are committed to complete the designated works within the allocated timeframe, with the highest quality standards and with minimum disturbance to customers. They also added that this is their second project with Haya Water; their first being Wilayat Seeb, which is expected to be completed next year.
Wilayat Al Amerat is one of the six Wilayats that comprise the Muscat Governorate. It is also the second largest, with a total area of 992 square kilometres, and the fourth most populous, with a current population of about 58,400 (2010 census). The population has been projected to reach 110,000 by 2025. Based on the current structural plan and plots allocated by the Ministry of Housing, the population is expected to eventually exceed 260,000.
The Muscat Water Reuse Project Master Plan has divided the Muscat Governorate into five sewerage catchments for project implementation: Al Amerat, Muttrah, Bausher, As Seeb, and Quriyat. The Al Amerat Waste Water Project, undertaken by Haya is a component of this Master Plan. This project provides sewerage and Water Reuse treatment infrastructure for Al Amerat and Al Hajir areas (the Project Area), both of which are located in Wilayat Al Amerat.
Population growth in parts of the catchment's area of this Project has been considerable over the past ten years, and the area has been made easily accessible by the Amerat - Quriyat highway and the Amerat - Bausher highway. It is envisaged that these two highways will help ensuring that the project area will be among the fastest growing regions within the Muscat Governorate.
The Al Amerat Water Reuse Project will be implemented in stages, as demand for sewerage services increases with population growth and development. The initial (Phase 1) implementation will include gravity sewer networks, sewage pumping stations and sewage rising mains, Water Reuse treatment plant, and treated effluent distribution networks, which will be provided through multiple contracts and intended to be completed by 2016. It is estimated that this will include in excess of 80 per cent of the population. Future implementation (after Phase 1) will include extensions to the sewer and treated effluent networks, additional pumping stations and rising mains, and expansion of pumping station and treatment plant capacities.
