The first of its kind in the UAE
A successful implantation of triple chamber ICD pacemakers was carried out for the first time in the UAE. The surgery performed by the medical team of Dubai Hospital Cardiology center lead by Prof. Dr. Najib Al Khaja with assistance from Prof. Dr. Walid Saliba, from Cleveland clinic, was carried out at the Dubai Hospital in April.
Gulf & World Traders (GWT), an interface with the world’s leading manufacturers in the field of medical, analytical and scientific instrumentation, provided the pioneering technology of Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) to the medical and health sector of UAE.
Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) is a device that gives the heart an internal electrical shock when sensing that atrial or ventricular fibrillation is occurring, to bring back the heart to its regular rhythm. It can be single chamber, dual chamber or as those implanted, triple chamber. The latter type provides support to patients with Heart Failure. A recent international study called MADIT II recommended that any patient having ejection fraction (the pumping ability of the heart) less than 30% should be a candidate for Triple Chamber ICD.
Both ventricular tachycardia (VT) and ventricular fibrillation (VF) are life threatening heart rhythms. In emergencies, paramedics or medical personnel can treat tachyarrhythmias with external defibrillators. Long-term treatment options vary according to the type of arrhythmia and individual patient circumstances.
Tachyarrhythmias can sometimes be stopped or treated with medicines or surgery. These treatments are used in an effort to control or destroy the portion of heart tissue that is causing the abnormal rhythms. In other cases, an implanted electronic device may be used to treat the arrhythmia. An Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) delivers electrical energy to the heart to slow it down to a more normal rhythm.
Tri-chamber ICDs are those ICDs treating Heart Failure; they include a pacemaker to ensure normal pacing rhythm while protecting the patient from sudden cardiac death.
“Gulf & World Traders (GWT) represents top multinational firms in the world who spend billions on R&D. Our aim is to provide medical facilities in the region with the latest proven technology to better service their patrons.
This is the first time to implant triple chamber ICD in the UAE and GWT being the leader in providing state-of-the-art medical technology to the region was at the forefront of such an endeavor,” said Eng. Nabil Emil Daoud, General Manager, Gulf & World Traders (GWT).
