New Cairo, Egypt

Giza Systems Education Foundation, in coordination with Fab Lab Egypt, officially opened Fab Lab New Cairo branch on the 26th November at Giza Systems premises.

The opening showcased state-of-the art digital fabrication and 3D printing equipment including laser cutters, 3D printers and computer numerical control (CNC) routers. It also hosted various exhibitions and activities that highlighted some of the main innovations created by the youth at Fab Lab Egypt.

Attendees interacted with the various projects from musical instruments, hexapods, and homemade robots to a Formula One prototype, 'Robofy' competitions, and tech workshops.

The attendees ranged from private sector companies and seed-funding sponsors to NGOs and youth that brought together a pool of resources that created an ecosystem for innovation.

Fab Labs foster creativity, create a space for innovation and collaboration in the community. Ultimately, they enhance the capacity and potential of the local workforce and provide opportunities for young entrepreneurs to create prototypes and turn their ideas into viable startups.

"We are extremely excited about the endless possibilities that could emerge from this landscape of innovation and collaboration. It has the potential to generate groundbreaking projects, uncover talents and empower a generation of entrepreneurs," stated Shehab ElNawawi, Chairman and CEO of Giza Systems.

"It is a social transformative leap that stems from the ideas of youth capable of conceiving projects that could transform life, business and the economy. We are talking about disruptive projects and technologies for the sake of sustainability," he added. Fab Lab New Cairo is to adopt collaborative approaches with the various entities to foster innovation, support startups, empower youth and bring creation to life.

In his opening speech, ElNawawi announced a call for action to the private sector for the new "Fab Lab on Wheels" project. The initiative aims to spread the know-how and technology to the various governorates covering Upper and Lower Egypt to create makerspaces in rural areas. By mobilizing the Fab Lab on Wheels, the project will make technology available for everyone, stimulate young talent and empower future generations.

"We are proud to be part of the first corporation in Egypt to establish a digital fabrication laboratory that is accessible to all segments of the community. Integrating Fab Lab activities with Giza Systems Education Foundation scope will increase our outreach. Moreover, it will reinforce our commitment towards the empowerment of youth through the employment of technology. It is definitely a key milestone in the Foundation's journey," stated Ghada Farouk, Learning Foundation Manager.
