Fujitsu Siemens Computers has announced the launch of five new enterprise and mid-range models in its Solaris/SPARC-based PRIMEPOWER server family. All new PRIMEPOWER models are based on its fifth generation 64-bit SPARC64TM V processors (*1) operating at 1.89GHz and are the first UNIX servers to be based on 90nm (Nanometer) semiconductor technology, offering a significant performance boost averaging 35 per cent.

The new PRIMEPOWER servers (models 650, 850, 900, 1500 and 2500) will be offered globally by Fujitsu Limited in the Asia/Pacific region, Fujitsu Siemens Computers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and by Fujitsu Computer Systems in North America starting from August to Nov. 2004 timeframe, depending on the model.

"The new-generation PRIMEPOWER servers represent a major advancement in this class of servers. They deliver improved scalability, enhanced performance and double memory. Some of the models in the new PRIMEPOWER series ensure virtual 100 per cent utilisation of invested resources because they are fully compatible with existing PRIMEPOWER installations, allowing them to mix and match the new processors with previous ones in the same enterprise system. With all of these enhancements PRIMEPOWER servers will reach maximized throughput and uptime," said Ashraf Al Arabaty, Product Marketing Manager, Enterprise Solutions, Fujitsu Siemens Computers.

The new PRIMEPOWER models continue to offer the superior reliability and scalability of previous models while delivering greatly enhanced performance: Based on SPECjbb2000 (Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation Java Business Benchmark 2000)(*2), PRIMEPOWER 1500 servers installed with 32 x 1.89GHz SPARC64 V processors hold the world's highest performance record in the 32 CPU class for running Java based business applications, processing 663,133 instructions per second. This represents a 35 per cent performance improvement over the previous model of PRIMEPOWER 1500 servers installed with 1.35GHz SPARC64 V processors. As this performance record demonstrates, the new PRIMEPOWER servers deliver the highest processing performance for Business Critical Computing environments, running mission-critical applications and databases - 24 hours a day.

The new models 900, 1500 and 2500 are also 100 per cent compatible with existing PRIMEPOWER installations, allowing them to mix and match the new processors with previous ones in the same Enterprise system. This means for existing PRIMEPOWER users a 100 per cent investment protection of their installed equipment.

1.89GHz SPARC64 V processors are designed, developed, and manufactured by Fujitsu. Special features have been added designed to enhance high-performance and high reliability. In addition to increased clock speed and leading 90 nm technology, the new processor will incorporate an enhanced 3 MB on-chip second level CASHE. The new models are based on a new system board supporting doubled memory capacities of up to 64 GB per system board. With all of these - clock, cache and memory enhancements, PRIMEPOWER servers will reach maximized throughput and uptime.

The SPARC64 V processor also provides a range of built-in reliability functions, including highly accurate error detection, Error Checking and Correction, and instruction retry functions that include error correction and other high-precision RAS functions. These features, combined with hot-plug redundancy of major system components, such as the power supply unit and system board, give the PRIMEPOWER servers the superior reliability and availability required for 24-7 system operation.

PRIMEPOWER servers are a core product line in Fujitsu Siemens Computers' shortly announced TRIOLE strategy for optimized IT. Aiming to meet the needs for open-standard IT infrastructure systems and improved business continuity and efficiency, the TRIOLE strategy is designed to help corporations and public institutions expand the scope of their activities, quickly set up new operations, achieve system stability, and reduce total cost of ownership.

(*1) PRIMEPOWER 650, 850, 900, and 1500 operate at the frequency of 1.89 GHz, while PRIMEPOWER 2500 operates at the frequency of 1.82GHz.
