Sharjah – UAE - Fish Business Unit at Souq Al Jubail- Sharjah, one of the largest fresh produce markets in the UAE, and one of Sharjah’s Asset Management Company's projects, the investment arm of the government of Sharjah, announced that the Fish Business Unit has received the ISO 22000 ISO Certification for Food Safety Management System by British Standards Institution (BSI).
The Fish Business Unit is the first market in the Middle East, Africa and UAE to earn this quality certification after meeting all the standards set by the British Standards Institution, one of the world’s largest and most consistent international quality standards organisation.
This ISO certification, granted by the International Standardization Organisation (ISO), is considered an international standard, which defines the requirements of a food safety management system that ensures the proper management of food safety operations. This entails the provision of dedicated facilities and qualified personnel to deal carefully and hygienically with food products in order to ensure the safety of products and the health of consumers.
The certificate was awarded to Omar Abudalziz Taryam, Manager of the Fish Business Unit at Souq Al Jubail by Colin Rushmere, General Manager (Compliance and Risk) at BSI.
"The Fish Business Unit’s entitlement to this certification came after a thorough audit by experts from the British Standards Institution, and a detailed and extensive review of the documentation and operational processes, verification of the safety of products in the fish sector and its compliance with the highest internationally agreed standards," said Omar Abudalziz Taryam.
He added: "This global certification is the result of the support and guidance of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and the keenness of the Fish Business Unit to achieve his wise vision, whilst ensuring that the Emirate of Sharjah is always at the forefront in providing best quality food produce. While we take special care to provide citizens and residents with fresh fish and meat, fruit and vegetables, we ensure that the fresh produce meets the best standards of global health, high quality and competitive prices.”
Colin Rushmere congratulated the fish sector on this pioneering and outstanding achievement, stressing that the management of the sector makes great efforts to ensure the safety of its products. He added: "The sector's eligibility for the ISO 22000 certification in a short period is a unique and a great achievement that constitutes a challenge for institutions dealing with fresh foods in particular. On behalf of the British Standards Institution, I would like to congratulate workers in the fish sector for this outstanding quality certification."
Souq Al Jubail, which opened in December 2015, is a family entertainment destination, as well as a market that caters to the needs of citizens and residents with regard to purchases of fresh fish, meat, fruits and vegetables with high quality and competitive prices.
It is worth noting that the market includes one of the largest fish markets in the country, in addition to 67 shops selling meat and poultry, and more than 150 shops for varied fruits and vegetables.
