As part of the Six Senses brand, which has widely been recognised for establishing the benchmarks for the industry, sustainability isn’t something that Six Senses Zighy Bay does, it’s very much a part of who they are.

Rather than for the day, the resort maintains a number of environmentally friendly and socially responsible initiatives every day, all led by the resorts onsite Sustainability Manager, Simone Troxler.

These initiatives form the ethos that the entire 82-private villa resort has been built around and include:

  • Sustainability Fund: 0.5% of revenue, 50% sales from water in F&B outlets, soft toy sales and voluntary donations by guests go to a dedicated sustainability fund, earmarked for community related projects.
  • Earth Lab- The resort makes its own cold process soaps, melt and pour soaps, bath scrubs, bath bombs, bath teas, shampoo bars, recycled paper, recycled glass ornaments etc. from recycled products within the resort. It’s a great outlet to showcase some sustainable efforts in the resort and is something guests can take part in.
  • Organic Farming- There is a herb garden within the resort, as well as an off-site farm (10km away) with Oman’s first artisanal cheese factory, a variety of vegetable and fruit plants/trees, herbs and livestock including Bees, Cows, Goats and chickens.
  • Sourcing Locally- In an effort to be sustainable, all products that can’t be grown within the farm are sourced as locally as possible, mostly from within the GCC.
  • Fish from Local Zighy Fishermen- Depending on requirement and seasonality, fresh sea food is sourced from the local Zighy village, the inhabitants of which are mostly fisherman by profession.
  • Beach Clean Ups: The resort hosts regular (twice a month) beach clean ups, for both the private resort beach and the neighbouring village beach of Zighy.
  • Six Senses Water: In order to reduce carbon footprint, the resort produces its own Six Senses water via an RO filtration process from the Sea Water. Drinking water is produced and bottled on site. Approx. 150,000,000 litres of water made in the resort itself annually, reducing the need for 250,000 bottles.
  • Eco-friendly Chemicals: All chemicals used for housekeeping, pest control etc are bought from a company called Eco-Lab which makes environmentally responsible products.
  • Sustainable beds: The Naturalmat handmade mattresses are made from Organic + Sustainable sources of raw materials, all of which are biodegradable and comply with fair trading polices
  • Zero Waste Focus: There is a big focus on zero waste and practice: reduce, reuse and recycle in all departments, with 85% of resort waste being recycled on site.
  • Waste Water Treatment Plant: There is an excellent water treatment plant which provides grey water used for irrigation using a state-of-the-art bioremediation for final stage waste water treatment using a reed bed for stabilization and sedimentation.
  • Burning ‘Bukhoor’ instead of Aerosol based room fresheners: In order to minimize impact on the eco-system around us, the resort does not use aerosol-based room fresheners, but instead burn locally produced resins like frankincense which smell amazing, push money to the local industry and also tie in with the tradition and culture of Oman.
  • Using Rechargeable batteries instead of disposable batteries: Batteries contain materials like nickel and cadmium which are extremely toxic and can cause damage to humans and the environment, cause soil and water pollution and endanger wildlife. They are very tricky to dispose responsibly, especially in this part of the world - hence, to reduce the impact on the environment in this regard only rechargeable batteries are used, which have a much longer life span and lower turnover ratio.
  • Working with Local Community: The resort is associated with the Zighy village and local schools in the neighbouring township of Dibba where they support the community both in cash and kind. This includes, providing education, infrastructure and strategic help to the local Girl’s School ‘Sakina Bent Al Hussein’ to support education and empowerment for girls.

There is also a variety of ongoing CSR activities planned with the municipality, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Education, Centre for handicapped, Oman women’s association.
