Dubai - The Dubai Women and Children Foundation headed by Chairman, Ahmad bin Obaid Al Mansoori, has appointed Afra Rashed Al Basti as Executive Director.

Al Basti has the mandate to oversee the functions of the Foundation, which include providing the women and children with professional legal counsel, shelter and care, and appointing a specialized work group to help and monitor their psychological health.

The Foundation's objective is to provide a refuge for women and children afflicted by poverty, abuse, and difficult or life threatening situations.

Al Basti holds a bachelor's degree in Applied Sciences, Biology and Geology from the UAE University. She was a member of the first UAE Federal National Council election committee. Earlier, she was the head of instructional material sections with the Federal Ministry of Education in Dubai. Prior to that, she was a member of the steering committee at Dubai Ministry of Defense.

Earlier this month, Dr. Abdullah Ibrahim AlKhayyat was appointed Vice-President of the Dubai Women and Children Foundation. Aisha Ahmed Al Marri, Dr. Muhaditha Yahya AlHashemi, Sharla Musabih, Alyaa Gerini, Dr. Asma Abdullah AlGhurair, and Abdullah Mohammed Bin Sougat were named members of the governing council.

The Foundation was established in July this year, under a decree issued by H.H Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashed Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai. It will operate under allocations from the government budget, and through contributions from non-government organizations.
