Renowned Medical Institution to Set up Academic and Research Centres in Dubai
Dubai: 29 July, 2007 - Dubai Healthcare City, a member of Tatweer, announced today the establishment of the world renowned Boston University Institute for Dental Research and Education Dubai and the Boston University Dental Health Centre Dubai, in the free zone.
Dr. Muhadditha Al-Hashimi, the CEO of Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC) recently signed an agreement with Boston University President Robert Brown and Dean Spencer Frankl of the School of Dental Medicine.
The institute will focus on furthering dental research in the region and on training graduate dentists in a wide range of specialties. The training programmes will match those at the Boston University School of Dental Medicine. The Dental Health Centre in Dubai will provide comprehensive, prevention-oriented dental services to residents of the region as well as to visitors. The Institute is in the process of submitting an application for accreditation from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the UAE.
Dr. Muhadditha Al Hashimi, CEO of Dubai Healthcare City, said: "The collaboration with such a renowned world class American medical and academic institution will further consolidate our position as a regional healthcare hub. This strengthens our status as the centre for quality and excellence in the Middle East, offering healthcare services and advance health related educational programmes in addition to scientific research.
"The Boston centres will join other leading world class institutions at the DHCC including the Harvard Medical School - Dubai Center, Mayo Clinic, AstraZeneca, Harvard Medical International, Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Medical Centre and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery."
While the Dental Health Center is scheduled to open early in 2008, the first trainees will enter the Institute in July 2008. Graduate training programmes will be offered in most of the recognised dental specialties.
Spencer Frankl, Dean of the School of Dental Medicine, said: "The development of the Boston University Institute of Dental Research and Education Dubai in DHCC is a natural application of the dental school's philosophy of a 'school without walls' and certainly is in harmony with Boston University's strategic plan for extending our global reach."
Professor Thomas Kilgore, associate dean in the office of Advanced Education and International Programs, will be the chief academic officer of the Institute. He pointed out that the dental school's senior faculty will play a continued, active role in programme development, research, and student training for the Institute.
In addition to Dr. Kilgore and visiting senior faculty from the Boston School of Dental Medicine, there will be a dental director and 20 full-time faculty serving the Institute and Dental Health Center Dubai. Eventually, there will be around 50 students in training with about 20 graduates per year. When fully operational, the Dental Health Center will have 47 chairs sharing some 30,000 square feet of space with the Institute.
