New yard handling equipment arrives at RGCT

Further equipment, including new cranes, expected soon

Kochi, June 2, 2005 : Four brand new  Rubber-Tyred-Gantry Cranes (RTGs) ordered by DPI Terminals (DPI) to operate in the container yard of the Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal (RGCT) have arrived at the terminal.  These eight-wheeled units (pictured being transported by sea to RGCT) will be installed and fully operational by the end of June. They were specifically purchased to significantly increase productivity for DPI's customers in Kochi.

With the arrival and installation of the new equipment, two of the RTGs currently in use will be completely rehabilitated.  Prior to DPI's involvement, RGCT had five RTGs only one of which - a leased machine - was in operation. Since the commencement of its operations at Kochi, DPI has already made four units operational. Two of these will be further rehabilitated to improve performance and productivity.

Once this programme is completed in the third quarter of the current year, RGCT will have seven fully functioning RTGs; further increasing DPI's ability to deliver the highest levels of customer service at the port.

This is not the only investment that DPI is making at RGCT. Two new Gottwald Mobile Harbour Cranes have already arrived at RGCT this month and a tendering process has already been initiated for 12 yard tractors and trailers.

Commenting on the delivery, Mohammed Sharaf, Managing Director of DPI Terminals, said:

"These deliveries are significant but this milestone marks just the start of an ongoing process of equipment upgrades and investment to make Kochi a much more productive container port.  Our commitment to developing RGCT and the new Terminal at Vallarpadam is long term and we intend to offer our customers the highest levels of service when they call at RGCT"
