The premier regional port operator earns ISO 28000:2007 certification for its UAE Terminals
Dubai, United Arab Emirates, September 15, 2013:- DP World, UAE Region has become the first port operator in the Middle East to successfully implement the Regional Security Management System standards and achieve its regional ISO 28000:2007 certification from Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance (LRQA).
The certificate was awarded to DP World, UAE Region after LRQA assessors independently audited the security management system put in place by the premier regional port operator at its four facilities in the UAE: Jebel Ali Port, Mina Rashid, Mina Al Hamriya and Fujairah Container Terminal.
Jebel Ali Port earned its individual ISO 28000:2007 in 2007. The management system is applicable to all activities including container and cargo handling, storage, and transportation, vessel movement, cruise liner passenger disembarking and embarking, and passenger movement.
The ISO recognition was presented to Mohammed Al Muallem, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, DP World, UAE Region, by Basem Obaid, General Manager, Middle East and Africa, LRQA, in the presence of UAE Region officials.
ISO 28000:2007 is the second internationally recognised accreditation achieved by DP World, UAE Region in recent months. In May Jebel Ali was awarded the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) Certificate, which focuses on emergency response plans, security awareness for staff, security briefing for security personnel, and documentation procedures.
Mohammed Al Muallem, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, DP World, UAE Region, said:
"We recognise the critical role we play in protecting and enhancing the supply chains of some of the world's leading companies. DP World regards security as a baseline service and port users can be confident that we are committed to exceptionally high standards which have been internationally recognised and industry accredited. The twin achievements of UNDSS and ISO 28000:2007 in two months is a result of team work and high performance by DP World, UAE Region management and employees. We congratulate them."
Saeed Suhail, Executive Director, Health, Safety, Environment and Security, DP World, UAE Region, said:
"Robust management practices are the cornerstone of port operation and at DP World we walk the extra mile to deliver excellence in managing risk and peace of mind to our customers and port users. We will continue to strive for excellence and improve our services and processes to adapt our business to the changing dynamics of the industry."
Achieving ISO 28000:2007 certification was instrumental in DP World being invited to join the U.S. Customs' Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT), paving the way for its participation in the U.S. Department of Energy's Megaports Initiative, fitting key terminals worldwide with radiation portals capable of detecting dangerous nuclear and other materials.
With its committed focus on Security and Safety, Jebel Ali became the first port in the world to achieve ISO 27001:2005 for its exceptional Information Security Management Systems (ISMS). It was also the first port in the world to receive the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) 5-Star certification. Other key areas in which the flagship port has earned international certification include, Quality Management System, Customer Satisfaction Management System, and Environmental Management System.
