'My City... My Environment' initiative
On behalf of Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, Eng. Abdul Majeed Saifaie, Director of Waste Management Department on Tuesday honoured the owners of winning houses in the practice of waste segregation from source under the title 'My City... My Environment' initiative, which was introduced by the municipality in February 2012 on experimental basis.
'The idea of segregating waste from source was applied in three areas, which are Nad Al Hamr, Mazhar 1 and Mazhar 2 on an experimental basis. According to the plan, the partner companies distributed two waste bins to 3700 houses in the selected areas. One green box designated for collecting recyclable items and the other one for organic items,'
'We selected five houses from each area considering their best practice and cooperation with the Waste Management Department to implement successfully the innovative concept of segregating waste from the source,' Eng. Saifaie said.
'The civic body also honoured housemaids of the winning houses, who understood the idea and implemented it in line with the instructions given by the officials,' he said.
'Apart from the winners, we appreciate all house owners and their housemaids who cooperated with the initiative and helped to make it a successful experience in all three areas. The department would soon extend the practice to the entire emirate with the cooperation of the best private sector partners,' he added.
'The successful experiment shows the positive approach and high level of education of the society that gives confidence to execute more sustainable practices in future in line with the aspirations of Dubai one of the most developed cities in the world,' Saifaie hoped.
Receiving the gift from Saifaie , Mr. Esa Ibrahim Al Hajji, Nad Al Hamr said that we have just done our duty towards the authorities and feel pride to be the best house in the area. More houses, especially housemaids should be recognized in future to get better results.
