Dubai: 28 October, 2009 – With the new academic year underway, Dubai International Academic City (DIAC), the dedicated higher education free zone and a member of TECOM Investments, welcomed all its newly enrolled students for the year 2009-2010 through hosting the traditional ‘Week of Welcome’ celebration.
Popularly known as W.O.W, the event was held from 18-22 October. Organised by the Student Hub, the official representative of the student body of Dubai International Academic City, the Week of Welcome offered campus universities a platform for interaction and allowed freshmen to receive a preview of student life at DIAC.
Dr. Ayoub Kazim, Executive Director of Dubai Knowledge Village and Dubai International Academic City, said: “This annual event serves as an ideal ice-breaker for new students. In addition to giving them a good idea about the cluster’s ongoing activities, the initiative also serves to raise awareness on DIAC’s health and safety guidelines as well as the code of conduct for students.
“The Student Hub department, the organizers behind this event, used the forum to highlight its activities and services that are rendered to the students and academic community in Dubai. Over the years, this department has been extremely successful in introducing new initiatives and projects such as the JAWAZ card for better serving the students and the DIAC community and promoting interaction among the students coming from diverse schools and countries.”
The orientation programme saw Lisa Franklin-Browne, Head of Student Services outlining the DIAC code of conduct, while Lara Yacoub, Career Manager, introduced the spectrum of career services that are available in DIAC. Shazadi Durrani, Student Services Co-ordinator, highlighted the calendar of events that has been drawn up for the new academic year.
The Week of Welcome included a movie night and desert safari for all DIAC and DKV students. A Talent Show gave students an opportunity to demonstrate their talents in singing, dancing or acting.
The fun-filled orientation week included a first-time ever campus concert ‘undeRage’ presented by Live Nation in association with SAE Institute and Byrne and other co-sponsors. The concert featured renowned local band Nicotine and Lebanese singer Ramzi.
The Week of Welcome was supported by main sponsor du. Co-sponsors Herbal Essences as well as Hewlett-Packard, which hosted the Finger dance competition and offered experiences in the latest series of touch-screen products, added to the fun quotient of the event.
