Leaflets on consumer rights distributed across petrol stations in Dubai
Dubai, 9 December, 2010: The Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection Division at the Department of Economic Development in Dubai (DED) distributed 50,000 leaflets at ENOC, EPCO and Emarat stations in the Emirate to educate the public about consumer rights and responsibilities. This initiative is in line with DED's commitment to strengthen interaction with consumers and merchants while promoting awareness on consumer rights.
The leaflets describe information related to consumer rights as reserved and guaranteed by the law, including the right to safety, right to know, right to choose, right to representation and the right to be informed.
They also educate retailers about their responsibilities, like avoiding misleading advertising, providing consumers accurate information about their rights, in addition to clarifying the policies regarding refunds, replacement, repair or rework for defective of damaged products and other cases. They include an overview of Consumer Law No. (24) 2006, and ways to submit complaints and comments to the Department of Economic Development in Dubai.
"The awareness initiatives highlight our commitment to strengthen awareness on the rights as well as duties of consumers and suppliers, besides activating communication with these groups to safeguard their interests as stated by the UAE laws and regulations," said Omar Bushahab, CEO, Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection Division, DED.
DED's consumer awareness campaign targets major shopping malls, co-operatives and supermarkets. DED's officials from the Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection Division will organize visits to traders to ensure the implementation and progress of the campaign. The Division is also working with various print and broadcast media through television and radio ads and interviews to receive consumer inquiries and respond to them to enhance their awareness. Consumers can also register a complaint at DED by sending an email to consumerrights@dubaided.gov.ae, or by calling Ahlan Dubai on +971 600 545555.
