About Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is the top destination in the Middle East in terms of international tourist arrivals (mainly religious tourists). The KSA's inbound tourism has increased 11% over the past two years. Travel and tourism combined to contribute 7.2%or around SR102bn of the Kingdom's GDP last year. The sector's employment contribution is expected to increase from 590,000 jobs in 2009 or 7.3% of the national workforce to 922,000 jobs or 9.4% of employment by 2019.
Initiatives such as Vision 2020 anticipate over 88 million visitors travelling through Saudi Arabia by the year 2020. In response to such dramatic increases, several major hotel chains have announced multi-billion dollar projects in Saudi Arabia, all focused on developing and expanding tourism in the Kingdom.
The Saudi tourism market generates around SR52bn in annual revenues, with export earnings from international travelers and tourism services expected to bring in SR239bn towards 2019. The Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA), the national authority responsible for the planning and development of domestic tourism, will lead government efforts to promote more inbound travel.
According to data from the current budget report, Saudi Arabia's GDP grew 3.8 percent with an expansion in the private sector reaching 3.7 percent. Saudi's income for the year 2010 was over 50 per cent higher with expenditure 16 per cent higher than budgeted. Spending for 2011 is set at SR580 billion -- the biggest ever. With over two-thirds of that to go on education and infrastructure, it is a massive commitment to the Kingdom's future and its growth -- so massive that the government is prepared to overspend by SR40 billion. The aim is to make sure that there is a well-educated and high-skilled workforce in the future and that the right infrastructure is in place to encourage industrial and commercial growth and so create the jobs that the burgeoning population will need.
