Abu Dhabi, UAE: Abu Dhabi Airports has reaffirmed its commitment to the Abu Dhabi Strategy for People of Determination 2020-2024, on the second anniversary of the strategy’s launch by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, by signing a new pledge alongside 12 other entities and strategic partners.

Abu Dhabi Airports is committed to contributing to the Abu Dhabi Strategy for People of Determination by steering the initiative “Inclusive Air Travel Experience” in the Universal access pillar led by the Department of municipalities and transport. From sensory units and pull cords to new seating areas and curbside and drop-off location modifications, the travel experience for passengers with reduced mobility is continually being enhanced at Abu Dhabi International Airport, and other airports in the emirate, to support inclusion.

H.E. Eng. Jamal Salem Al Dhaheri, Managing Director and CEO, Abu Dhabi Airports, said: “Officially reaffirming our commitment to the Abu Dhabi Strategy for People of Determination is a proud moment for all connected with Abu Dhabi Airports. Playing our part in advancing the social sector agenda and helping build an inclusive, cohesive society in line with the leadership’s vision has been a privilege. Related policies and programmes have driven immeasurable impact to date and, whilst celebrating this important milestone, we are enthused by the prospect of continuing to empower more people of determination in the future, as a catalyst for social change and transformation.”

Abu Dhabi Airports joined 25 other government entities in a strategic capacity building programme delivered by the department of community development in collaboration with “World Enabled” on disability mainstreaming in policies, programmes, measurement and data to ensure that the initiative is delivered according to global guidelines and best practices.

HE. Dr. Layla AlHyas, Executive Director of Community Development Sector, Department of Community Development stated: “Through the Abu Dhabi Strategy for People of Determination, key entities are demonstrating a collective commitment towards the inclusion and empowerment of People of Determination in line with the fact that disability inclusion is everyone’s responsibility. We, at the Department for Community Development, are proud to have Abu Dhabi Airports as a key stakeholder in the implementation of the strategy as they work on ensuring that People of Determination and their families have an inclusive and seamless travel experience, and we call for continued effort to implement innovative and transformative solutions to transform the emirate into an inclusive and empowering society for people of determination”

Abu Dhabi Airports joined fellow stakeholders at a training exercise organised by the Ministry of Community Development last December entitled ‘Supporting passengers of determination’, that targets front-line airport staff to ensure all passengers enjoy the same levels of service excellence across different touchpoints while travelling.

Since 2020, Abu Dhabi Airports has embraced its involvement as a key shareholder, helping to integrate the strategy across at its 5 airports whilst facilitating innovative opportunities for front-line employees to improve their skills and provide a convenient passenger experience for people of determination.

At Abu Dhabi International Airport, two sensory units located in the play areas in Terminals 1 and 3 incorporate educational, recreational and therapeutic techniques, for children with sensory challenges to help them relax, focus and self-regulate. Sensory rooms represent a modern relaxation method used as part of treatment and early intervention programmes for children with autism.
