Demand from urban sprawl and growing millions of pilgrims necessitates 20-year strategic re-development - plan to take centre stage at premier Saudi real estate show

Jeddah - A strategic 20-year plan for the re-development of the city centre of Jeddah - principal gateway to Islam's holiest sites and the second largest city in Saudi Arabia - is to take centre stage at the first Cityscape Saudi Arabia exhibition and conference later next week.

"Our plan provides a futuristic vision for this historic and ever-changing city," said HE Adel Faqeeh, the Mayor of Jeddah. He will be a giving a keynote address on the Jeddah City Center Development at Cityscape Saudi Arabia, taking place at Jeddah Center for Forums and Events from 14-16 June 2009.

"Our main objective is to ensure high living standards for residents and visitors to Jeddah as the main gateway of pilgrims to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah," Faqeeh added. "We want to make Jeddah a modern city that can compete with international cities, at the same time providing a high standard of living as well as protecting environment."

Prominent figures in the Kingdom's hierarchy will be taking part in Cityscape Saudi Arabia which is being held under the patronage of HRH Prince Misha'al bin Majed bin Abdulaziz, the Governor of Jeddah Province, who will carry out the grand opening.

"Cityscape Saudi Arabia provides us with a unique opportunity to showcase the redevelopment of Jeddah," said the Mayor of Jeddah. "The strategy focuses on urban areas, optimum use of land, boosting the local economy, protecting the environment, improving social services, expanding tourism and transport facilities, as well as developing infrastructure, seafronts, recreational centres, housing facilities and underdeveloped areas."

Over the past 60 years Jeddah's population has increased 100 times and the area covered by the city has expanded by 1,000 times. "Jeddah has developed from a traditional port to a civilized urban city and our strategy is aimed at achieving a balanced development of all districts in the city," Faqeeh said.

The Cityscape Saudi Arabia conference will also feature a series of panel discussions on the impact of the global financial crisis on real estate investment and development in the Kingdom; updates on the regulatory system, legislation and mortgage law; Shariah and conventional opportunities in real estate investment; and the residential needs of the Kingdom.

Cityscape Saudi Arabia is aimed at regional and international investors, real estate developers, government and development authorities, architects, designers, consultants and senior professionals involved in the real estate industry. It will also be an arena to showcase projects and network with investors and developers from around the world.

The Cityscape Real Estate Awards will take place on 14 June 2009 and are aimed at recognising exemplary contributions to architecture and real estate development in the Kingdom. The winners will be declared at a gala dinner attended by senior executives and high profile guests.

More than 100 companies are expected to exhibit at Cityscape Saudi Arabia over 10,000 square metres of floor space, attracting over 5,000 participants, making it the Kingdom's premier real estate investment and development event. As well as Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia, Cityscape events are also staged in Mumbai, Singapore, New York and Brazil.
